Cricket World Cup : Finals Preview

The Group Stage of the Cricket World Cup is now completed and so we have only 4 teams remaining who will each play an Elimination Semi-Final in the next couple of days followed by the Final. Congratulations to India, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand for making it through the Group Stage. Commiserations to Pakistan who finished 5th and I also have to give a good shout-out to Afghanistan who punched above their weight all tournament to get 6th. Getting close is not good enough though, so it’s all about the Top 4 from here.

I’ve initiated the withdrawal from my HBD Savings for the Prizes of the Sweepstakes that I am running for the World Cup. Congratulations to @bitcoinman, @technico, @dfinney and @asgharali for making the finals. With a 70% to 30% split for 1st and 2nd that means 2 out of you 4 will be getting paid on Sunday! The Semi-Finals with a short preview are :-

India vs New Zealand – Wednesday 15th November

The undefeated top team India plays 4th place New Zealand in what shapes up as a bit of a lop-sided contest. India have been unstoppable and have enjoyed playing in the local conditions in front of adoring crowds all tournament. New Zealand on the other hand dropped 4 games against all the other Top 5 teams (including Pakistan) and have looked consistently competitive without being spectacular. They are really up against it here but historically New Zealand have been capable of big upsets in important games.

Australia vs South Africa – Thursday 16th November

Two teams that at times through the tournament have looked both dominant and vulnerable. At their best both of these teams pack incredibly powerful batting lineups so if the pitch is remotely flattish then another 1st Innings score of 400+ is definitely possible. This game probably comes down to whomever can bowl better and in that department I think that Adam Zampa is probably the point of difference between the teams. He is the top wicket taker for the tournament so far with 22 wickets so a good performance from him again here could deliver the win for Australia.

Only 3 more games left in the World Cup. Good luck if your team is still alive!

New Zealand should win this time. This team is very unlucky. I feel sad for them 😑

If India are going to lose a match then I’d say it’ll be the semi-final at the Wankhede. The pitch there is probably the best surface for non-subcontinent teams to play on in India. It does sometimes move around a bit early on and generally it’s got a bit more pace in it. India are still big favourites but if New Zealand can exploit those conditions and put India under some early pressure then you never know. Expectations are high and that Indian tail is long!

That's a very good call. I've been expecting India to be playing on turning pitches all tournament but Wankhede has been flat until now. They'll be playing this on a used pitch?

Not sure if it’s a used pitch but even if it is, I wouldn’t anticipate that it turns much. If you look at the way Mumbai Indians set-up to play their home matches there, they tend to load up on overseas seamers and very rarely use their budget on big name frontline spinners. Trent Boult, Jofra Archer, Mitchell Johnson, Mitchell McClenaghan, Lasith Malinga, etc, etc even guys like Jason Behrendorff who you wouldn’t usually expect to excel in the subcontinent looks effective on the red soil pitch at the Wankhede.

I’d say NZ are worth a small bet pre-game at around odds of 3.5

In game because of the nature of the pitch where it might do a bit early on then flatten out, the under/over total runs market can often offer good odds if you can time your bet as the advantage begins to swing towards the batting team i.e. when the ‘over total’ required to win the bet will be at its lowest.

Great tips, thanks. I haven't watched much of the IPL in recent years but the player movements is a great insight. Trent Boult could be a key man with experience in the conditions.

I'll check out the betting markets you mention. You make a lot of sense!

Seems like you have been into cricket too much. Hehe. My nephew is a great fan of cricket. Kicking out of Pakistan made him feel worse.

At this stage, with so powerful teams in play, it is quite difficult to say who will win.
