Cricket World Cup : Middle Stage Update

(Edited)

It's just over half way through the Group Stage of the Cricket World Cup with 24 of 45 games completed so far and the tournament is now really starting to take shape. There have been a few big upset results so far but overall there isn't too many surprises on the competition ladder and to my eye there is probably only 5 teams which are in with a chance to make the Top 4 and play in the finals from here.

The Bolters

Since my last update the biggest bolter is Australia. Considered one of the early tournament favorites they dropped their first 2 games before getting it together to beat Sri Lanka, Pakistan and the Netherlands in fairly commanding fashion. Their Net Run Rate is also now very positive and they are looking a much bigger chance to make the finals from here. Their next game is against the only Top 4 side they haven't yet played - New Zealand and if they can win that game they will most certainly play in the finals.

The surprise packet is Afghanistan. They weren't expected to do much this tournament but have knocked off both England and Pakistan in recent matches. It's unlikely they can make the finals but they are clearly playing a spoiler role and can't be taken lightly. They appear to be loving the Indian conditions.

The Disappointments

The biggest disappointment would have to be England who were upset in the opening game by New Zealand before going on to flop badly against massive underdog Afghanistan and then followed up that loss by being trounced by South Africa. England were one of the pre-tournament favorites but they have failed badly this campaign and have very little hope of making the finals from here.

Not far behind England in the disappointment stakes is Pakistan. They were my dark horse for this tournament but after losing to India, Australia and then failing against Afghanistan in consecutive games they are looking very vulnerable sitting in 5th on the ladder. It's not too late for Pakistan to make a run at the Top 4 but with 3 losses on the trot they need to turn it around very quickly.

Overall, the standout performer for the tournament is India which is no surprise to anyone. They are undefeated with 5 wins from 5 games and it genuinely would not be a shock for them to go through the whole tournament undefeated. Both New Zealand and South Africa have 4 wins each and have good ladder position but have shown some vulnerability. South Africas loss to the Netherlands was fairly incomprehensible so this might not be the tournament where they are likely to shake off the "Chokers" tag.

Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and the Netherlands are all sitting on just 1 win each. It would be a pretty safe bet to rule a line through these 3 teams at this point.

The table is posied perfectly with many turnaround expecting in next couple of matches too...The road to cup is not easy for India either. They will be tested sooner.
Afghanistan shows the true approach in the game against Pakistan. Australia is pumping up now for another race to cup...England forgone how to win and everyone is waiting for South Africa to "choke" the end result could be anything...

India have already beaten Australia, New Zealand and Pakistan. Perhaps their only remaining challenge in the Group Stage will be from South Africa. If they get to finish 1st on the ladder they play whoever scrapes into 4th....so maybe they won't have a serious test until the actual final?

Each player have made their contribution ...this is what makes the team vulnerable to choke by carrying away easily....but anyghjng could happen in the points table..

I want to see New Zealand on the top list and hoping to lift this world cup. Also will be getting 32 HBD as well 😜😁

What's the 32 HBD? My sweep is 70% for 1st and 30% for 2nd. 70% of 40 HBD is 28.

Good luck!

It will be quite difficult to dethrone India from that top spot as it is going right now

England’s problems stem partly from scheduling issues in our domestic game which basically means our best white ball cricketers don’t play 50 over cricket outside of international matches and even then the number of games we’ve played over recent years has been minimal and the squad picked often involved a large amount of rotation. Understandably, people would place the reigning champions of both 50 and 20 over cricket as one of the favourites for a tournament but their underwhelming performance isn’t that big of a surprise given the poor preparation for this World Cup over the last couple of years.

It is a shame that England haven't sorted out those issues so that they could put up a decent defense of the World Cup. I still am a big fan of the ODI format but it seems in decline in many parts of the world.

I never believed that Pakistan could be in the 5th place
After India, I thought they were always the second best
That's the game they cherish well in their country

Srilanka secured 8 wickets win against the defending champion today. This team is improving and as 5 matches more to be played, I think there would be a tight race for the 3rd and 4th position. 1st and 2nd would be secured well before 8th match played a side.

Many of the matches in this world cup looking as they are one sided, there should have been competitive pitch conditions in such world stages, but thats not happening currently in India.

I would want to see some magic for the rest of the tournament, If Pakistan or Sri lanka performs well, they could book a ticket to the semi's.

Good luck, 👍

I’ve already forgotten who I have, but I’m pretty sure it wasn’t anyone good.

Today's match was much more interesting than the one between Pakistan and South Africa and if the umpire had given out in the end, Pakistan could have won this match.
