3 Orchid Day: Actifit Report Card: September 10 2021

Friday morning bin pickup noise comes around in a hurry - not fun after 4 hours of sleep and does not set me up well for the day. Was thinking of doing the weekly shop and then do a walk. Just was not in the mood to shop. Committee decided we could make it to Monday. So I set in place a walk plan to explore another route into the suburb adjacent. Cycled into the Ku-ring Gai Wildflower garden to gain access

Walked the top walk as I was sure I would find orchids before doing the big walk. Not sure what this little pink twin flower is

Did find a tongue orchid not long into the walk. 2nd for the season and first time I have seen them here.

This is the season for bearded orchids - saw a few buds getting ready in a few spots. Stuff to go back for. The bottom half of this walk was touched by a hazard reduction burn. I was pleased to see the tar path stopped the flames reaching the very rare genoplesium baueri sites I know are here

Not far from those sites was this spotted sun orchid - I have seen these in the garden but not up at the top of the hill.

Side on view.

Got on the bike for the loop around Solander Trail to join Showground trail

Saw a flash of blue on the steep part down the hill - more sun orchids. The petals/sepals are quite different in shape

The sun orchids standing tall were easy to spot on the lower part of the track

Close up

Parked the bike at the start of the showground trail and started the big walk. As I had already scored the orchid of the day I was flexible about when to turn around. The trail runs along the arch of the ridge below the top and is easy walking - mostly with a canopy.

Did see a bud for bearded orchid before I reached the showgrounds - then nothing in the way of orchids.

Love this little white flower - did find a bonnet orchid leaf

This insect was enjoying a good meal - half done. I let it be after the photo

A bit early in the season for a tree to be dumping sap like this. They normally do this when they are stressed. The path dropped down to a creek with a little bit of rain forest feel - this will be a spot to walk in autumn and winter.

On cue was another bearded orchid bud. I walked another kilometre plus a slice of one of the bike trails back toward the road. No orchids - turned back. Next time I will start from showgrounds and walk from there.

Literally 20 meters from the showgrounds access trail was this orchid standing on the edge of the track

First of the season - onion orchid. ID is really hard as the flower is tiny - size of a match head.

I am thinking common onion orchid - microtis unifolia. 10,000 step warning came as I found the last orchid - a long walk to get a new sighting for the season.

I liked the walk but it feels like the land has had cattle or horses on it = no orchids. Ride back up the two big hills was hard - legs are tired

Did do a little more garden tidy up stuff. Got to keep on top of that.

Dinner: Pizza - simple stuff from scratch with bought GF bases.

Trade action: Watched market open up for first time in the week and then turn over. Stayed away from trading
