First Waxlip Orchid of the Season : August 4 2022

(Edited)

It is a grey day and it is forecast to rain heavily around the middle of the day. I do need to do some shopping. Plan then is to walk a track in the National Park to recce spring orchids first and then hit the shops - I am hoping to find two new openers for the season

Spring flowers are emerging - spider grevillea

Pea flower - what will be the theme of the day?

Two tone purple pea flower

Did find one of the orchids - small waxlip orchid - just one flower

Glossodia minor - side on

Pink spider grevillea

Four petal flower - each petal is about 3 mm long

Lichen abounds

Two tone yellow pea flower

Last of the banksia flowers

Did find one sun orchid open enough to identify - spotted sun orchid

Found one more - thelymitra ixioides

A bud looks like an orchid - it is not - milk maid is the colloquial name

Deep purple pea flower

Did find a cluster of greenhood rosettes not seen before on this track

Waratah tree - the state flower of NSW

More signs of spring

Red and yellow pea flower

The pale colour of this pea flower caught my eye. It looks white but is two tone in mauve

Highlight of the day was this find close to the entry gate. My friend, Jan, told me 5 years ago about them - taken me that long to find. This is what I saw under the bushes. About 3 inches tall with a rosette of 4 leaves

Front on view - I am struggling to ID - possibly pterostylis concinna though the normal maroon tinges are absent. I asked my experts - it is pterostylis nana - small snail orchid. This is a unique found and maybe the most northerly known location

Side on

Was hard work to get a labellum photo - eventually turned the phone upside down. Always good to find a new orchid on a track walked hundreds of times

Did the shopping after. Rain was a lot later coming along as the sun set

Dinner: Pizza

Trade action: Bought HOOD, SLVO, STEM, ESTX50. Call spreads on TAN.
