White Themed Flowers Day and New Season Onion Orchids : September 20 2022

Slow start after a late night. Big news of the day is my wife's grandson arrived at 1:27am. Welcome Oliver Hunter.

Forecast was for a sunny day. Did not work out that way - cloudy but not raining. Spent the morning catching up on accounting - week after options expiry is busy. Should really be out doing training rides if I want to do a tour in October. I cannot get inspired. Did get out on the bike to look for flying duck orchids

First stop is to check for orchids next to the fence line where I park the bike

Quite a few spikes - and a few open

Onion orchid - microtis parviflora

Close up is hard as the flowers are the size of a match head

Budding

Budding sun orchid - looks to be yellow

Milk maids - makes the theme of the day - white flowers

Burchardia umbrellata showing a few faces

Spider grevillea

Dosera - a carnivorous plant

The detail of these always gets my eye on such a small flower - detail is not visible with naked eye

These are a burst of white

And the next orchid of the day is also white - fairy orchid

Caladenia alata

Cluster of tongue orchid leaves with one bud

Found a few flying duck orchids budding in a known spot. A few days behind last year cycle - this one furthest ahead

Next spot of flying duck orchids - they did not show up in this spot last year

Walked the long way up Murrua Trail looking for sun orchids - saw only one but quite a few more on the way back under the powerlines - two in the photo - one ringed

In all saw about twenty budding. Need sunny days to get them to open

This is a telling photo of thelymitra carnea - pink sun orchid. The pods show the plant has been pollinated yet the flower did not open. Yep. They self-pollinate

Close up of the top bud shows the seed capsule is swelling. I will be back next week to see if I can get one open.
