Kalkari Track for Fairy Orchids : September 21 2022
Forecast was for heaps of rain. Got moving earlier than normal to do the shopping and work in a walk before hand. Mission is donkey orchids and flying ducks.
I like to do car park check before I walk. Did not need to do this as I saw this orchid as I swung in to park - caladenia catanata. New location
Found the fairy orchid a little higher up the track than last week
Caladenia alata in a touch of pink
Bracts on the spike suggest bearded orchid
Hard to tell - maybe the same - next week
This looks like a star burst - a few more down the spike
One spotted sun orchid - flower spike has become top heavy - laying down
A bearded orchid standing tall in the other plants. This will work as wallabies may not find it
Close up of the bud. Turned around with no sign of flying ducks in two known spots
The colony of 4 bearded orchids has survived the wallabies. A bit further ahead than last time but not enough to ID.
Kunzea always grabs the eye
Back onto the other track and found a fairy orchid in white - only one flower left from last week's 4.
No joy on open of other sun orchids - this one has pollinated before opening - this looks more yellow than pink
Went down a side track recommended last week for flying duck orchids - no luck this side either. Walked furher than before. One sun orchid was what I got - not open
There were lots of midget patersonia - normally 18 inches tall but these are two inches tall. This one a double header
Side on shows the two flowers on one spike
Spotted sun orchid on the way back closing up shop - thelymitra ixioides
Today could have been a pea flower day - lots and different
My staked out sun orchid has gone. Not to fear as there a good 20 budding. Did find a purple bearded orchid on the way back
Close up shows the basal glands looking back and the corded labellum - calochilus campestris
Right opposite the ticket booth is this budding orchid. Maybe next time.
Did not rain - hit the shops for a few German specialities. Stayed dry until well into the night. Holiday for the Queen's Memorial tomorrow. We will drive up to Hunter Valley for last weekend tidy up and final inspection
Did not find the two orchids open I was hoping for but did find some to savour and some to look forward to
Dinner: Pizza from scratch - quiet evening as my wife is not well. Racing heart rate - maybe from a few spider bites from weekend. Hope that is all it is - I have other thoughts.
Trade action: Stayed out until Fed decision hit. Bought ABN.AS, VOW.DE, PYPL. Credit spread on ELV. I want in on the Porsche IPO and the Volkswagen special dividend.
