4 Orchid Find on Northside of Lovers Jump Creek : December 4 2022
Another slow start day. I sure know how to dither a day away when there is stuff I do not want to do. My wife went out shopping with a friend. I did some garden tidy up stuff. Wrote up week's investing post and updated the detailed accounts
Did go walking after lunch down the north side of Lovers Jump Creek - can only walk weekdays as track is closed in the week. Start with a rant - the equipment had been working and parked where there are two different colonies of chiloglottis orchids - neither will survive and for one it is the only spot this side of the creek. Sydney Water are doing the work - they do not care
Last season someone dug out two thirds of this colony. Sydney Water just did the rest - this is the only colony this side
Not all doom on parts just off the track - cluster of tongue orchids not open last week
Two in one cryptostylis photo - subulata and erecta - new spot for both
First time in three years this creek has not been running over the track
Cryptostylis erecta hard up on the track edge has escaped track work as the machine could not cut that close to the rock face
New spot for both tongue and bonnet orchids next to a spot trashed by track work - almost always a spider web
Cryptostylis erecta
Stopped for photo of Christmas Bells complete with cicada husk
And right below was the onion orchid I saw last week with its last flowers open up top - microtis parviflora
The intriguing find was the number of variegated hyacinth orchids flowering on the steep sides of the track
Dipodium variegatum
Another cluster of flowers
Stages of budding - see how the buds fold away from the spike
Flower is the size of a thumbnail but has some depth - camera struggles with focus points. Really needs focus stacking
Note the tufts on the labellum
Found two together hard on the edges with roots exposed
Used the tree as backdrop for next photo
Side on
White form of dyanella
Still a few pea flowers around
Walked back through the streets as I could not face the damage done by Sysney Water in their work relining sewerage lines - they tell me this work will last for 50 years. Some of those orchids are gone forever.
Watered the lawns - hot days are wiping it out in a few spots up front
Dinner: Heated up bolognese sauce made the day before
