Fab Day Riding Peel Valley : January 8 2023

Sun came out over the Great Dividing Range

View from the hotel room looking north. Plan today - drive down to visit my brother-in-law and I will cycle back the 22 kms from Woolomin to Nundle

Road follows an easy climb up the Peel River valley - Chaffey Dam wall from below

The view down the valley toward Woolomin - stunning blue sky day - warm but cool enough riding into the wind

Water level is as high as it gets - right up to the spillway

View up the dam. Rode to Bowling Point Alley cemetery as friends had suggested this could be good for orchids

Cemetery is 1 km up a track - parked the bike and walked. Snapped this bee action on a thistle.

The track to cemetery was not likely for orchids as the land has had cattle on it

Cemetery is on a piece of fenced Crown Land - vegetation is different - will be worth exploring in spring for orchids

This lists all the graves going back to the start in the 1800's

Top of the dam at the turnoff to Nundle - reflections

Poplars got swamped at the time dam filled in 1979 - not rotted away yet

Rest spot in the shade near the top of the last hill - looking back the way I came

The folds of the Peel Valley and the Great Divide are pretty special

Nice ride back to town - gets me interested in touring around here

Went for a walk down the river later on

A bit of irony. There are protest signs in town about the proposed wind farm. The business setting it up - Engie, the French utility, have taken over the Post Office to run a community hub.

Stopped at pub for a coldie - not done that for a while. Tomorrow we head up over those mountains for the coast

Dinner plans changed. We went into Tamworth with my brother-in-law and his wife. Landed up at a Chinese restaurant as Thai was closed. Had a great dinner.

Made one mistake - did not fill up on the way back to Nundle
