Getting signs of Midge Orchids up Kalkari way : January 20 2023
Another rainy start to the day. Plenty to keep busy in the morning - like feeding the king parrots - was a different crew today with 5 males and only 1 female
Three in frame here like a staircase
Stand off - amazing thing is they defend against their own but not against the smaller lorikeets
Planned to go to shops to avoid weekend shopping. Chose to drive through the National Park with a stop to check if my favourite walking track is open at Apple Tree Bay. Track has been closed since March 2022 - still closed
Disappointing as it has the best concentration of autumn orchids
Walked a track up at the Asquith side of the National Park. It is the second time this week. I am keen to see any sign of midge orchids. Did find a hyacinth orchid in a spot I have not seen before
Banksia serratum
Lots of fringe lilies flowering. I thought their season was done. They get me thinking of a few friends tackling cancer - the ladies like these
This one just opening
Leptospermum - one flower a lot later than normal
Twin fringe lilies. Did not find any sign of midge orchids in the zone seen last year
Did find these horned orchids deeper in the bush than the track side spot seen a few years ago. Big lesson there - these orchids stand tall. I found them as I looked a bit wider than normal
A little further on was this dragon fly - quite still it was
Did find the midge orchid in a known spot from last year. It looks like a grass seed. The difference is the flower spike pushes its way through the sheath. Will be back next week
Crossed over to the other side of the road and walked a loop back to car park. Purple dampiera found on the path under the powerlines
Did find one hyacinth orchid in the deep bush on the path that cuts through from the car park to the works depot.
Happy to find a budding midge orchid. Concerned about ths lack of show for the brittle midge orchid - it is endangered
Got the shopping done - took 3 shops to get gluten free bread and alcohol free wine for my wife
Dinner: Got Pad Thai sauce in the shop. Made a prawn pad thai - really easy to do but not quite up to Thailand flavours
