Turtle Orchids on Lovers Jump Creek : February 23 2023
This summer is starting to feel like 2022 - rain every day - was hoping to go riding but the rain kept coming back. Did the investing accounts. Pottered around in the garden. Now at 100% profit on the cherry tomatoes - taken 5 months - water was free with full tanks and lots of rain.
Walked the local track. Been holding off as I had heard the work by Sydney Water had done a lot damage.
These little mushrooms - smaller than a US penny below the track
Side creek flowing harder than normal but not bad - last big rain was overnight
This track was not quite 3 foot wide. Now it is 4 metres wide and all the orchid spots have been hacked away at the edges. Somehow the water company has been prevailed upon to build a fire trail
Did find a new colony of chiloglottis orchids above the track - out of reach of the water company digger
Found a few flowers open - turtle orchids
Side on photo is clue to the English name. Latin name is chiloglottis seminuda - half naked as calli go only half way down the labellum
Good news is track work has spared this orchid colony - the other two are gone. This is the only known spot for pterostylis baptistii in the local government area - looks like 4 plants left
The day was about fungi - this one about 3 inches across
Walked off track to check a known spot for turtle orchids - they grow in the moss on a big rock - only one seeded plant showing
The slope of the rock is maybe 70 degrees - there are a few leaves in the photo. The photo shows a bald patch
The rain has smashed them off the rock face - debris was all below. Came off in the last big rain.
Rainforest and rain - leech heaven - inspection found this one
Fungi action below the track in the next chiloglottis spot - a few leaves but no flowers
Creek crossing - Lovers Jump Creek - was only two or three inches deep. Did find small gnat orchids flowering but photos were rubbish. Sad part is almanac said I would find 3 wasp orchid types in flower - track work has wiped one out.
Dyanella iris
Walk done - umbrella not needed - 3 leeches - glad I wore boots and not sandals
Dinner: Pasta with chipolata sausages and a Mediterranean saice
Trade action: Bought GCI, BROS, RHC.AX. Credit spreads on CBOE, CCJ, CHPT, CVS. Hedging trade short QQQ. Short PFE. Sold USD for AUD. Look out for next investing post next week

We had some spring like weather for a couple of days and honestly I can't complain about that, spring is my favorite season. Not out of the woods yet though...
By the way, I love those close ups you took, nice bokeh effects.
