Recce for Autumn Orchids in Seven Mike Beach NP : March 10 2023
Plan for the day is to drive down south after school zones finish in the morning. Get there in time for my wife to do afternoon meetings. Find out that we are looking after dog Charlie again. He arrived around 9 am. We left 10:20 - got dinner planned for a friend - tomorrow might need shops
Drive was quite quick. Dog was happy. Went for a ride to walk Seven Mile Beach NP. Last walk here I suggested these palms would soon block the track - not far off
Australian native violets are spreading vigorously - not good news as they suppress orchids
Photo challenge time - half the size of a US penny
The mission for the day is to find autumn orchid locations without expecting any flowering. Will be back in a few weeks - will see openers then - greenhood
Two leaves - will get to four
Different photo challenge - grass head seeding
Leaf litter is a problem - acianthus orchid leaf showing around the edges. Size of a penny
A little bigger - maybe there will be one budding
And there was - becomes orchid of the day
Pea flower - took the leaf photo to be sure of ID. Different to others I have seen
More greenhood progress - all 4 leaves formed - maybe a bud shaping up
More open version of the little white flower seen earlier
Next sequence of photos is a course in orchid spotting. See this leaf starting to fold out as it emerges.
Close by was one a bit further on - note the purple underside. Seasoned orchid spotter knows it is a mosquito orchid taking shape
Close by was this heart shaped leaf - acianthus orchid. Orchid spotter folded the leaf back to confirm the purple back we had seen unfolding
More greenhood leaves
One more leaf formed - shape and colour and smooth edges tell me it is the same orchid
The edges on this leaf are not smooth = different greenhood
Coolangatta Mountain shapes our lives here
Rode back home along the Shoalhaven River - looking down to the mouth
Looking west up the river. Was good to get out into the open bush and to hear the sea
Friend coming over for dinner. She has had a tough week. A good way to help is cook a good dinner and chat
Simple meal. Beef Fillet done Philadelphia style on the BBQ with lots of veges
Chef got to enjoy a Rymill Cabernet from 2005.
Stayed away from markets - looking ugly
