New Helmet Orchids in Seven Mile Beach NP : May 17 2023
Was going to be a big day. Ride down to pick up my car. Drive back and then pack the car for a few days in Shoalhaven Heads. Am sure pleased I wrapped the fridge up in a tarpaulin on the trailer - could get some rain on the way down. It rained hard over Kiama Heights - fridge should handle that. Got unpacked and headed out on the bike to look for orchids late
Was a walk for mushrooms

Mosquito orchid is now opening - pixie caps - acianthus fornicatis
Last time I saw a mushroom with blood red lines. Never knew it would turn into a fluff bundle like this

Helmet orchid bud is well developed - hard to ID.

Colours and spots and shape of leaf agree. Will only know when the helmet is full
This is what it could turn into - spots are there. Colour gets deeper. Leaf shape is similar
This is the open version. Fringed midge orchid - corybas fimbriatus
Rain got a bit persistent and light was getting low. Turned back - red mushroom

Did get an open mosquito orchid - best photo from the back - acianthus fornicatis
Met a young man walking toward me - he has done plant ID but not up on orchids. I might have converted him. Long chat did cost me riding back in very low light. Also did not do leech check when I left the bush. Mistake
Found the leeches at home - 2 on first inspection. One later in the shower.
We had dinner with a friend - red duck curry using duck we bought in Chatswood on the way down. Was a fab night. Our friend's daughter just started 8 weeks long service leave. Time to celebrate
