Steep walk to Waratah Bay - no orchids : June 11 2023
Weird dream night again. Plan for the day was to walk down to back end of a track in Ku-ring Gai Chase NP that has been closed since the big rains 3 years ago. The track is rich in orchids. Drove up to Berowra Station while my wife drove her nephew to his new digs
The walk is a steep drop down to Waratah Creek and then Waratah Bay.
Never know what is going to be orchid of the day - bonnet orchid leaf up high
Banksia in great light
Multi-level mushroom
NSW coral heath flower
Waratah Creek - a gentle flow
Steep sides - almost vertical for 80 metres - was pretty cool
3 forms of mushroom - same type - different stages
Next orchid find not far from the water - greenhood
This one had budded but flower has been chomped off
Waratah Bay
Landscape version - a few boats parked up for Sunday fun
Track closed sign was not far from where the track hit the water. No chance to walk any further to get to the places I know there are orchids
Lovely clear water and oyster beds
Remnants from old times
Looking back up the creek
View back up the rainforest segment
Was a day for mushrooms - folded in brown
A touch of orange - size of a 20 cent piece.
Found one more greenhood rosette higher up - no buds
A new mushroom for me - dry looking but not dry
Acianthus orchids with leaf well off the ground - no spikes
Five corner red flower on the way back up the hill
Took a different track back up to cut out 3 or 4 zig zags. Straight up it was. Was a reason - hit a cluster of orchid leaves
Greenhood and helmet orchid leaves
Banksia
Found a few more greenhood rosettes on the way up near the top
Looks like nodding greenhood getting ready
This heart shaped leaf had a spike - the bud is different to the others seen so fsr this season
Budding mayfly orchid - acianthus caudatus - first for the year
Epacris longifolia
And right at the top was this greenhood - a seeded sharp greenhood. Was a tough walk for not a lot of orchid outcomes. Next time I want to access the lower track, I might have to take my chances with a kayak.
Spent some time tidying up the back yard. Also started a project to install an irrigation system in one vege bed. Been on the list of projects for ages.
Dinner: Pizza.

thank you so much for sharing a great report, have a great day, have a great week
Wow those Banksia are wild!
I love the little bay and clear water. Seems like such a great place to spend 11k steps and pick out all the little signs of life. You certainly know your flora!
Thanks. Learning the flora bit by bit. There is a great app call iNaturalist which has enough Australian contributors. Upload an image and location and it will give guesses as to ID. Choose the guess you like and the community will steer you right if you are wrong - gently
