First season nodding greenhood in Seven Mile Beach NP : June 22 2023

avatar

Was another tough night fending off this cold. Rained off and on which made for noise in the waking time. Back is hurting - too much time on the bed which is too soft. Just kept turning over trying to convince myself to get back to sleep

Wake to a cloudy day and rain forecast for late. Forced myself onto the bike to ride a bit further along the main road to access the bush track. There is a NP sign on the road. Duck in there as there is a rich slice if orchid areas in both directions. Twin bristle helmet orchids

Lots of pixie caps orchids open - photos of one only

The most common orchid are these - corybas fimbriatus

The guide books talk about them liking a sandy base - this is sandy with sand coming from ant nests

Budding greenhood - probably nutans

A little further on I caught this bud opening - nodding greenhood

And behind was an open nodding greenhood - first for the season on this track. Worth getting out for that

Pterostylis nutans - one of 4 open

Matching rosette

One more open. My son called me not long after. Wanted to chat about a job move

Spied this moth as he called - stood for a bit - then took the photo and kept walking

Found a few orchids while we chatted - corybas fimbriatus

Painted fingers orchid - caladenia picta

First of the trim greenhoods for the day

Front on - pterostylis concinna

A few more caladenia picta - nice to find many as last trip only saw one

Double decker with one also finishing

Zoomed into the bottom one

Multiple concinna showing

A different double decker with concinna at the front and picta at the back - hard tonget focus working well

Key to ID for the concinna is the cleft labellum - showing well here

A few photos on the way - corybas fimbriatus. Walked past the bike to the southern side as I know of some greenhoods there

Budding nodding greebhood

Photo shows 3 budding with smallest one next to track and the biggest at the back

Did find the trim greenhood colony I saw last time - a bit some on with labellum showing

A nice tidy colony all at similar heights

Photo of corybas fimbriatus found between the path and the road. There are hundreds of orchids in that 50 metre wide strip

Sure pleased I got out to ride. It is is flat riding and cool. Body cooed with that to a point - fever did kick in.

Had a small lunch of leftover fishnand chips when I got back. We drove down to Berry Markets so my wife had a chance to get out. She gets out to shop.

That is how the step count went over 10,000 - not sure I should have done that much. Avoided the afternoon nap.

We watched TV. I cooked comfort food - beef patties. First cooked meal in 4 days

Was awake when markets opened. 4th down day. Chose to skip doing pension portfolio covered calls - premiums and coverage are poor on days like this

Thanks so much. The painted fingers orchid is pretty special. It is the first of the genus to flower always quite a few weeks ahead of the other members. Nice to find so many different spots too.
