First nodding greenhood on Lovers Jump Creek : June 24 2023
That was a shocking night. Somehow my body has forgotten how to sleep. Was cold. Got another blanket. Made no difference. Every time I turned my back was hurting. Eventually got up to try the spare room so I would disturb my wife less. The struggle kept going - did get to sleep as the dog next door woke me with its barking. My wife had already gone out. When she came back we went together to go pick up a heavy item she could not carry.
Pick up place was down a few roads in the next suburb up I have not visited - steep hills and bush. House was on an out and back loop. I walked the loop to look for orchids. A native violet flowering I did find
The loop included a waterfall - hard to get a good photo in the dense bush
The view down the creek into the rainforest. Body sure is struggling with the lack of sleep. Best thing I did when I first got up was to take steps to address the sore back - rubbed ibuprofen gel on the sore bits. Relief was instant.
Went walking Lovers Jump Creek to get the steps in for the day with eyes on 3 orchids. Spurred helmet orchid first. Photos are not the best as light is low in this piece of rainforest
Twins - always good to have two to target as one knows always that one is out of focus - corybas aconitiflorus
Target 2: still a few sharp greenhoods open.
This one is a pure green form - pterostylis acuminata
And one just shaping up. Crossed to the other side of the creek for target 3 - not quite open but there are 2 forming up
Nodding greenhood. The best part is this looks like it will open. It failed at this stage last year and the year before
Better news is the one a little further up is better. Last year there was only one. There are now half a dozen plants but just 2 spikes
Opposite is a colony of chiloglottis orchids - a bud is just starting
And around the corner is bud starting on the first coastal maroonhood. They are normally flowering by now.
I did have some home chores to do. Lay out compost on some bare patches in the garden. Fertilise the orchids. Replace a barbecue grid on which the hot rocks stand. That was a bug job as there was mega cleaning to be done. Good part of that is there will be fewer flare up fires for a while.
Got lazy and did leftovers for dinner. Cannot say my body is whole yet. Stayed up late to avoid the risk of not sleeping or waking with hours and hours of darkness to go.
Watched England vs Australia women cricket. When I started one of the England players was close to passing all time highest score against Australia - she did. Then watch to see if she could get past all time highest - a record from 1935. She did. Then they did tea break and I gave up past 12:30.
