New season sun orchids in Bomaderry Creek : September 13 2023
Had plannned to do shopping today. My wife was keen to stay home and do not a lot - not true as she did volunteer to look after our friend's puppy. That is full on work. Was in two minds about fitting in a walk. On the drive out chose to walk first and shop after
Walked Bomaderry Creek Regional Park - walked it quite a bit - with the chance of sun orchids chose to walk a cut through to get higher up the powerline trail. Lots of patersonia iris
A day for pea flowers it became
Slender rice flower
Next in the class of pea flowers. Must say the stretch through the bush to the powerlines was a bit bereft which explains why I seldom walk it
Saw this sun orchid under the powerlines off the path. Thelymitra ixioides - spotted sun orchid. There is often a reason for getting off track
Between the spotted sun orchid and the track was this little sun orchid. Looks to me like trim sun orchid - thelymitra peniculata
A bit of the photography challenge - this one taken with shadow over the flower
Spotted sun orchid without spots a little further along
Another trim sun orchid. My Shoalhaven orchid gyide does not have thelymitra peniculata in it. It does have a similar looking orchid - thelymitra media. To me my find does not have the veined appearance on the sepals and petals
Saw these waratahs flowering just where the main access trail crosses under the powerlines
Close up. Always a treat to find these wild. They are often pinched for home displays or for sale - $20 each in the local market
The last of the budding sun orchids under the powerlines. Below this there were none - different types of grasses prospering
Spider against the light about the size of a nickel
View across Bomaderry Creek to Cambewarra Mountain
Epacris gunnii - a new find for me
Pea flower scaled up
Tiny version in a little pink
Tracking back - spotted sun orchid found off track - photo is interesting with 3 columns facing in different directions
Black and orange pea flowers just emerging
More waratahs open
Close up
Track view for this waratah
One last sun orchid on a side track not walked before
Did the shopping - was not in the mood for that but it got done.
With nice weather and a day off doing house preps we decided to ride down to the pub on the river for a wind down drink
It is not often this calm - no wind over Shoalhaven River - view to the river mouth
Looking up river toward Nowra
Nowra is home to the navy base. We often hear and see the helicopters training
Was a good way to wind down and get a mini ride in
Puppy came over to visit - a wind down for her owner fir a drink and a chat.
Dinner: Spaghetti bolognese
