Finger orchids in mid section of Seven Mile Beach NP : September 15 2023
Heading into a warm day. My wife headed back home to finalise the house set up. I decided to stay back to leave here space to do what she thinks is needed. Spent the morning on investing stuff and a little Internet Marketing
Headed out on the bike to ride to middle section of Seven Mile Beach NP before lunch. There were orchids between the road and the track where I carry the bike across.
These finger orchids have me confused. My local guide book mentions 5 possibles one of which flowers from October. That leaves 4. Then one is known only from one site - that leaves 3. I will classify what I see in words I understand - dumpy fingers and green column
This one differs in colour with pink on the flared lobes
Back view shows the green back to the column. For these 3, most likely caladenia catenata - pink form
The key differences here are the carmine bands - caladenia carnea
Side on shows the distinctive calli on the front edges of the labellum - carnea
This one does not have the bands - more fully red on the column. Will not post all the photos I took - focusing in on differences
Double header
More white than pink with shades of bands - another hybrid
Nodding greenhood - pterostylis nutans
This one has me even more confused - sort of got the bands and a deeper purple
Close up
A few of these just opening up
More differences - yellow calli in the back - all the others are white
Twining glycine
Turned around in this grassy area. Focus on the way back was to get one photo of each difference
Purple pea flower
2nd week seeing these flowers emerging - not done an ID yet
Dumpy fingers
Pointed fingers
Flared lobes with pink edging
Flared lobes without pink edging
Red bands a bit broad
Partly formed red bands
Sometimes a photographer gets lucky. Walked past this budding dyanella and then doubled back to get a photo - on the plant in front was this opportunity
A spider - minute in size
More splotchy red on the column
All white petals with a spot of red in the column
Flared lobes with pink edges and carmine bands
Close up
Paper daisies finishing up. Walked quite a bit further than normal - a good 2500 steps from the bike park area. Not as many finger orchids as the previous day
A little more cycling done. Going to be a challenge doing Kids Cancer Ride next month - house move aside, have just not done the training
Was home early afternoon. Quick lunch and then spent 2 hours pulling weeds and strimming the back lawn.
Dinner: Steak fry up with fried potatoes, bacon, egg. Do not often do that.
Trade action: A few adjustments ahead of options expiry on NOK, BARC.L. Had done most of it earlier in the week

Your 16k steps reminds me a little of the portage portion of my camping adventure last week. Often I had a canoe on my shoulders and was unable to stop and examine like you but there were no orchids to be found!
There were frogs though! ;)
Would be easier to put in at the south end of Seven Mile Beach and then paddle the ocean
