Bearded orchids on north side of Lovers Jump Creek : September 22 2023
First full day in the big smoke for a few days. Went shopping with my wife - not generally a haven for photos. This one caught my eye
Special at $4 and the tag beneath says $3.50. The register did the $4 special. A friend has been posting a few like this almost daily. Sign of the times - lazy tag person or a deliberate game
Got that out the way and went walking Lovers Jump Creek on the north side - king greenhood still not open
The bud is taking shape. Photographer was not patient enough to get a photo in focus in low light in leech country
Did find an open chiloglottis orchid at least a week later than the one seen on the south side - just one
Chiloglottis formicifera
A bit of a yellow day - not sure of the genus - maybe ochna
Side on of leaf and fruit
Sun orchids have taken a bashing in the few days of heat- leaves all brown but flower spikes seem OK
Thelymitra pauciflora
Close up of the bud - flower will be white
Yellow pea flowers
Just below was this red banded insect - it stopped to pose
Chiloglottis trapeziformis - a few still flowering
Front on photo is the hardest
Spider grevillea
Goodenia up close
Two flowers and a few buds
Cluster of about 10 pateronsia irises
Close up
Up beyond Clissold Link into the high ground - bearded orchids budding. Last time it was just leaves reporting
Sun orchid budding - will open one day next week on a warm day. There were 10 to 15 plants here
Spied this bearded orchid opening
Close by was this one a little further along. Clues for ID - the tape coming out the bottom of the labellum and the lack of basal glands - red bearded orchid - calochilus paludosus
More fully open further along
Side on
On the way back. This one been infested with a spider and something nibbling
Always thought orchids flowered from the bottom - not these
A different bearded orchid - has two basal glands like eyes looking back AND no tape - calochilus robertsonii
One just opening close by
Successful walk with two ant orchids and two bearded orchids and three budding.
Got home and spent the last hours of daylight raking the front lawn. With the overnight rain did not have to water the lawns
Dinner: Pizza so house did not smell of fried fish for open house
