Late Ride on Stinking Hot Day for Tongue Orchids : October 30 2023
Turning into a hot day over 33C - not the day to do the long ride I wanted especially given I am still shaking off that cold - went out for a late ride - like after 4 pm
Rode down to Murrua Road access to Ku-ring Gai Chase NP to look for a specific cryptostylis orchid seen two seasons ago - one flannel flower open. They always attract bugs
Not sure what this big is on a banksia leaf - maybe a cocoon of some sort
A few lambertia formosa - hard to tell what their season is
Never know what the orchid of the day will be - first one up is a seeded bearded orchid in a spot not seen before
Pea flower became a photo challenge - there is enough in focus but not all the flower
A better candidate for orchid of the day. Promise of cryptostylis subulata - back now leaf below was green
A new flower - not seen before - not spiky enough for kunzea
Twin tear drop flower
Purple fan flower a little off track
Walked a side track and found more budding cryptostylis orchids
And a few flowering - cryptostylis subulata becomes orchid of the day
The tough photo showing the two veins from the underside - happy with this one
Did find the white kunzea in flower
A bug I have not seen before was happy to pose around the spot the cryptostylis hunteriana was last seen
Gumnuts getting ready to flower
Tossing up which is the best way to photograph - against the track or against the leaves. At least with the leaves we can ID the flower
A wall of kunzea
Was a bit reticent to post this photo - flower is the size if a US penny. I stopped to get photos as there was a wasp looking for nectar - between the wind and the wasp there were too many moving parts. But there is a story
Last stop - photos of a new slender onion orchid just showing its flowers - microtis parviflora
Talking about moving parts, this ant with pollonia raced up the plant and back down but would not pose - did catch the story
It was a case of forcing myself out onna hot afternoon to ride for Kids Cancer. Glad I got some orchids open for the effort
You can donate for Kids Cancer at https://mclnks.com/kidscancerride or send some HIVE or HBD - use gccoz as the memo and I will send the cash on.
This has been a hard challenge as we have had a few setbacks - more than a few - and a few hurdles to climb. Nothing compared to what rhe kids with cancer and their families face. Reach out.
