Old Gordon Houses on Christmas Eve walk : December 24 2023
Some weird dreams. Nights have been getting as my back starts to realign itself. Am going to need to find a chiropractor before too long
New flower open on the stanhopea - it has an intoxicating smell of jasmine and vanilla. Some people say chocolate - I do not get that.
Rainy morning - caught up on the weekend before investing accounts - a busy options expiry week. Did go out late to walk to get some steps in. Walked the other side of the Pacific Highway - not walked that before. Walked through this park and found a road the other side going at right angles to Pacific Highway
Theme for the day is the old single story houses that side - not all have succumbed to the knock down rebuild
Many have immaculate manicured gardens
All are face brink- no rendering and painting
Reminds me of a time gone by - all single story too
Road ended on a steep drop down to creek below - too steep to explore
Can imagine this is something of a waterfall when it rains
A few nice gardens on the way back - a range of traditional roses
Pink
A grand old style white rose
This one called Mister Lincoln - still had its tag on
A bit of old world Europe in this architecture - the castle like tower and the flying buttresses
This is a different style of old houses - the blocky double story which might have started out as a couple of apartments. Reminds me of the streets of Rosebank in Johannesburg where I grew up. This one is now a single house
Got the steps in. Found a few segments of bush I need.to get access to from below - who knows if they have footpaths.
Preparations for Christmas continued - my wife did a few shopping chores in the morning. I peeled potatoes for the potato salad she is tasked with for tomorrow. She baked a gluten free Christmas cake.
I cooked dinner - fried fish and mash and peas
For me I made rösti - my favourite food from my years working in Switzerland

Houses do look similar to some found in older areas still in South Africa, always enjoy a nice verandah to sit out on enjoying a garden.
Architecture and design has a romantic appeal, constructed with minimal maintenance on the outside being brick.
Hope your Christmas turned out to be everything you hoped and more!

They remind me of old Joburg suburbs. My brother lived in a few spots like that in Durbs. Observatory in Cape Town is a bit the same but with smaller grounds. Think Plumstead or Kenilworth near the railway line. Same same - railway line is within one km
Most here were close to railway being the transport of the day, the larger more elegant in suburbs where folks afforded cars.
Trust you and family had a good Christmas and Boxing day.
Was a different time with my wife’s family. Hoping to catch up with some of mine later this week.
Not my favourite time of year
Everyone wants to see each other once a year and don't bother all year round! Yup not always the best time here either.
