Crookhaven Heads and North Nowra Orchids : January 20 2024

Wake to a clear blue sky and a cooler day. Was hoping to go orchid hunting or to see my son. Well the way things panned out - drive down to Crookhaven Heads to buy oysters for dinner.

My wife dropped me off in North Nowra so I could survey some orchid sites. She will shop and I will cycle home

Purple fan flower right at the first survey site

Did not fund any of the target orchids. Did find a seeded horned orchid. Not the same one I saw last walk but in the same location

Did find a bonnet orchid under the powerlines - not seen them here before. They are normally prolific in this dry scherophyll forest

When my friend shared the orchid sites, I thought they were new and I had not walked them. As it happens I have - normally access from a different track but turn left and walk up these powerlines and then walk down the other side

Lambertia formosa - a few flowering

Never seen a pink fan flower. Maybe it is just a faded purple one

One of the survey sites was on a differnt track that I had not walked before. Walked a bunch of the side tracks all in the bush - so not open grassy areas. Did find a tongue orchid just as I turned. Cryptostylis subulata - have seen these in the general area

Rode home from there. Longest ride for a while - was quite hard work on a flat road into a strong headwind. Good to be out on the bike

Had friends over for dinner. Oysters from Crookhaven Heads to start - yum.

Main course: Salmon sous vide, mashed potatoes and ratatouille - photo is a progress photo before the canned tomatoes went in. Noce dinner in nice company - first time hosting our immediate neighbour
