Helmet orchids by stages in Seven Mile Beach NP : May 28 2025

Not the best of nights. Watched Giro d'Italia till late. Woken long before dawn by furniture moving upstairs and then running water again before dawn. That put my ideas for an early drive down to South Coast on the slow burn. Just go with the flow and stay alive

Traffic did not help - the Sydney Harhour tunnel was closed just as I got there - maybe an over height vehicle stuck. No warning ahead of a possible exit. Stood for a while - then saw movement off to the bridge emergency access. Took that - maybe a default notice in the post when I get home. Drive after that was quiet

Got on the bike late to walk Seven Mile Beach NP - orchid progress to check. First up was a surprise - a budding acianthus orchid in the turning circle where I park the bike. Never seen these here in all my visits thus far

Been a whack of rain here too - lots of mushrooms

Last walk I photographed little mushrooms on this fallen tree. They are now full size

Maybe ghost mushrooms - not coming here in the dark to check

Did find a lot of pixie caps orchids flowering - acianthus fornicatus - tough to get focused photos in low light

Real mission was to check progress on helmet orchids - this photo is out if sequence but it fits a theme for the day. Stages of fringed helmet orchid - three stages in one photo

First signs of a bud - a few speckles on a hear shaped leaf on the ground

Bud a little bigger and getting some burgundy colour

Normally the helmet forms over the centre of the leaf - like this

Back to normal programming - native violet

Keeps shape all through doubling in size

My mushroom friend in South Africa always asks for photos of the underside - easy for this one as something else has turned one over. Right in the track

Another late night. Watched NSW vs QLD rugby league. Pleased to see NSW to a crunching win. Them onto Giro d'Italia waiting for US markets to open. A few things to adjust
