Helmet orchids in Royal National Park on the way home : June 30 2025
Heading back to Sydney today - farewell photo of Coolangatta Mountain on a blue sky day. The big weather front is marching in hard from the south.
Drove to Waterfall to walk Uloola Falls Trail in Royal National Park - mission is two helmet orchids
Front end of the walk goes up into the dry scherophyll forest
Last season orchid - hard to ID - maybe a horned orchid
A few hibertia still going
Mini flannel flower
A lot of wattle flowers - trying to get a track view - did not work on this one - the others were out of focus
More tightly packed and shorter leaves suggests this is a different banksia to the one before
Wooden mushroom look
Found a few leptospermum squarrosum flowers still going - literally one per plant
Walk was a bit short of orchids - found this single leaf emerging - hard to ID - bearded orchid is the most likely candidate with a few months to go
Cryptostylis orchid leaves
Another orchid leaf - similar to one seen earlier.
Walked a long slice of the MTB track - never a good idea to walk these as these are carved out of the bush. The orchids do better where there is less competition = on established tracks
Did find helmet orchid evidence - one past flowering. Are there more?
Yep - more wilted ones
Did find some flowering - spurred helmet orchid - corysanthes aconitiflorus. The intriguing part of the big walk is these were found 200 metres from the start of the track. As I focus on one side of the track on the walk out I missed it - twice including on the wrong turn
Good to find one of the two target orchids. Also good to break a drive into two parts.
Got home - shopped to get a few things - added the steps
