Back to ride Seven Mile Beach NP : July 4 2025

The weather bomb earlier in the week forced a lot of replanning on how to get my car down to the South Coast so I can help my son on Saturday. My wife suggested she drive down after work on her own and suggested I drive down earlier. Made that the plan. Left before midday. Stopped to shop on the way

Gave me enough time to cycle to Seven Mile Beach to look for orchids. Cycled to the end closest to our village. There is a track I walk from - National Parks have moved these two huge logs to block access from the road - looks harmless enough

Take a few steps back and see the turmoil caused behind by the vehicles they used. The sand has been completely turned over. The bad news is they destroyed a colony of pterostylis oblonga which were just starting to open two weeks ago. Sad as there very few colonies of this orchid all along this side of the park

Was hoping to find a few different orchids this walk - bristly helmet orchid on its last legs

Pixie caps orchid - acianthus fornicatus

Orchid #3 - a budding greenhood - do not know what it is

Painted fingers orchid - they do like the coastal plain

Always like to find a second flower open - caladenia picta

One more pixie caps orchid - the pollinator I saw crept inside the helmet

Bristly helmet orchid which had been eaten open so you can see the column

Front on - corysanthes fimbriatus

Not much mushroom action - got one

Did check around the area of the NP log work - found a few greeenhood leaves. The damage got me looking more widely. Hard to say if this is oblonga or curta - need a few weeks to get flowers

Good to get out on the bike - been a few weeks

My wife arrived a bit before 8. Did pizza for dinner - the photo celebrates the start if Tour de France tomorrow in Lille
