More Sydney High Blue Gum forest walks : July 10 2025

Got a blue sky day for a different walking day. Dropped my wife's car off for registration inspection in the next suburb along. Idea is to walk back home through on of the remnant Sydney High Blue Gum forests

Have walked this reserve before - do hope to find orchids

New signage out up by National Parks - previously we had to follow our noses to know where to go

Fab high trees on the path that cuts through the middle of the reserve - too many ferns for orchids

A few orchid leaves on the upslope coming away from the creek - acianthus orchid - no flowers

Did find one flower spike higher up - flower is gone. Had seen nodding orchids here in prior seasons - walked along the edge of forest - couod not find any. Turned around to walk back and found them

Nodding greenhood - pterostylis nutans

Angle from the front - focus is better

Checked the map and doubled back to find a path to walk back home - nice cluster of greenhood rosettes - one budding

Another cluster - includes a few acianthus leaves

Found the sealed track through the bush - sign posted as a bike route. Follow that

Path follows the creek to reach a cross street

Track meets the road - follow the signs

Photo does not capture the steepness of this hill for the bike route - seriously steep for a 100 metre climb

Discover all stors of stuff on new routes - the local substation and a brush turkey posing

Fab old Queenslander cottage along the way with bullnose verandah

Next gap along offers a better angle

Back to the bike path which cuts through Richmond Park. Walked that a few days ago

This is also a remnant forest - turpentine ironbark.

Did the bus to get back in the afternoon to puck up the car. A little shopping on the way home - then into the city by train to meet friends for a few drinks.

Small creek with gorgeous ferns would make an interesting explore.
