Illawarra Escarpment SCA walk on wat home : July 20 2025

You will know the drill by now - photo of Coolangatta Mountain from chicken feeding time

Yes. Back to Sydney. As I am travelling on my one - easy to stop on the way home to break the journey up

Chose to walk a track in Illawarra Escarpment SCA on Mt Keira - Wollongong - not walked this in winter

A few epacris longiflora - not quite in focus

A few hypericum flowers open

Cryptostylis orchid leaves

A new find for me - INaturaliste suggests cloanthes - not sure of the detailed ID

Mimosa flower season is on us - spiky leaves

View down to Wollongong from up Mt Keira - a bit of off track walk to get a view

A bit more open

Vine time - heading up - some way to go

A big colony of chiloglottis orchid leaves as the track drops off the escarpment - no flower spikes

Cut back the road and walked up back to the car. No orchids here either

Signage for the No Access has been changed - more strident colours - bigger penalty for going into catchment area

Ginger flower up high next to the road - are they native? A long way from gardens

Disappointing to not find greenhoods but a good enough walk. Next time I will explore tracks the western side away from the MTB tracks

Breaking the drive was a good idea. Pretty tired when I did get home

Dinner: BBQ boerewors and salad

Yes! Another 10k+ with pictures of the native plants along the way. You have such an eye for picking out the little details and identifying the species. I have broken down and installed Google on my phone for the lens app that is pretty good at naming what I find from pictures.

Learning the names helps me appreciate which ones are native and which ones are invasive and I can battle ion the garden.

A more useful tool is iNaturaliste. Post the photo - plug in the location - it will help with ID. Make your choice - then the community will agree or disagree. The best part is that then goes into the citizens science records when you get 3 people agreeing

The Mimosa flower looks good. It’s not like every regular flower and that’s what makes it unique

We have quite a few types - they are like a star burst. Hard to photograph
