Hornsby Blue Gum Walk new season orchids : July 23 2025

avatar

Had a busy morning doing investing accounts and some work on latest IM launch. Got on the train to walk Blue Gum walk from Hornsby station

Mimosa flower on the way down to Blue Gum Steps

Part of the Great North Walk which follows the creeks with loops back to intervening stations. Met a Japanese man on the steps - no English - he showed me photos from his start at Westleigh - at least 9 km walk

He was finishing these steps up - I was going down

Hakea flower against the track

Kookaburra posing on the distance marker board - the man came from Thornnleigh

Have heard the lyrebird calling down this end of the track often but never seen one - on the track scooting away out of focus

Have previously found nodding greenhoods on the way up the track - none to be found. Also know of a spot down this side track - too bad it is closed

Mushroom hiding under the ferns

Part of the mission - find these greenhoods - rosette - one only this side

View back down the hill - Sydney Blue Gum forest - one of a few left

Mushrooms hiding under a fallen tree - light was dull but it worked

More mimosa flowering

The mushroom photo challenge - a bit of water on top wants to grab the light

Mini-mushroom forest

Walked to the junction - path down goes to Fishponds - to the left goes to Dural and the right to Galston Gorge. Need to plan better to do any of those - turnaround time

Chiloglottis orchid leaves on track side on the way back - no buds

Went off track a bit and then followed the small creek for a bit. Not done that before and got a reward. A cluster of nodding greenhoods - what I was hoping to find lower down the hill

Nodding greenhood - pterostylis nutans

Did find a few pixie caps orchids flowering - close up

Nice head of flowers - ringed

Mushroom and moss contrast

Down the hill in places I was expecting - budding greenhoods. I know what they are - any guesses?

Leaf is distinctive - it has a stalk and the leaf is smooth edged

Bud forming

A bit further down and along in budding

Close up of the bud - start planning the next walk

Kept going down the hill and found a flower open lower than I have ever seen. Yep - the rain takes the seeds downhill. If conditions are right the seed will take root

Just enough space to get around to do front on photo - blunt greenhood - pterostlyis curta - first for the season

Kookaburra bashing worm on the track

Ends a good walk - always good to find a new season orchid. Got to say the big walk to and from station is hard. Bike or car next time

Not the end of walking for the day - headed into the city to have dinner at a new restaurant opening. 24 York offering $48 steak frites in a New York style. Steak was fab - the $48 tab is a bit steep but not for us as we shared. Event was somewhat disrupted by a fire alarm - nobody moved

Steak and sauce was fab - will go back

Did get a preview blog post written for an AI Affiliate product launch - read that here https://mclnks.com/aigoldfpz

Another dsy over 10k steps - done that every day for a whole week. Good training for October 7 Bridges walk for cancer https://mclnks.com/7bridges
