Sydney Harbour walk - train - walk - ferry - train : July 29 2025

Had my eye on a few posts about the upcoming weather. Today is the day to get out and do the next of the walk between public transport points in training for 7 Bridges Walk.

Plan is to train to the harbour bridge and walk along the harbour foreshore to Taronga Zoo and ferry back from there. Trains were a bit disrupted to start. Walked to Killara Station to head to Milsons Point

Walk starts from here at the north side of the Sydney Harbour Bridge

Pass the Kirribilli Hotel - had a few lunches here

Old Victorian cottages with the wrought iron work

The original houses were built with sandstone blocks hewn from the cliffs here - this one still has the blocks exposed. Many have been covered up

View across the park next to Sydney 16 foot skiff club - had a few dinners here too. Detail watchers will see a Virgin jet in top left corner

New territory for me from here walking through the site of HMAS Platypus - a navy submarine base until 1999. In WWII was also a torpedo manufacturing site - photo from those times

One of the torpedoes made here

Tribute to some of the sunset that were based here. I have seen the memorial to HMAS Ottway - it stands in the town oh Holbrook on the NSW - Victoria border

View down the harbour from the submarine base

View back to the cliffs - an old building cut into the cliff face. Grand apartments above

Lots of stairs up and down and uonto get to next cross road - Moreton Bay fig reaching down to water across the rocks

Walked to the end of Cremorne Point via Cremorne Reserve - nice even path all the way around with just one set of stairs

Always a photo across the harbour fingers - first sighting of Salesforce.com tower

Strelitzia photo across the harbour. Had to frame that - the flower was my army regiment symbol

Unfolding views of the Sydney skyline across the water. Had not noticed the cloud form at photo time

First sighting of the Opera House

And unfolding further to include Sydney Harbour Bridge

Swinging around to include the navy base

Walking backnuo Cremorne Point - photo across to Taronga Zoo - target for the day. Given the way the harbour fingers go, that is a long walk. Start to replan - maybe walk to South Mosman

Looking back to the grand houses along the foreshore. Imagine if old man Milson had succeeded in building the coal mine he was working on. Plenty coal down below

A lot of poinsettia flowering along the way - this one frames South Mosman ferry wharf across the water. Noted there are no waling tracks along the water. Got to walk up and over the back to get there

Change of plan - ran to get ferry at Old Cremorne Wharf - time to head homewards

A few old style houses in among the modern

Did get to South Mosman wharf saving myself a big up and down walk

View across to Taronga Zoo - as it happens on a different ferry route to mine. Another time - ferry there and then walk further

City views from the ferry - interesting clouds above the opera house

More navy base views from closer in

Opera House close up

Stopped for lunch - sushi - then headed for a train home. Great to have multi-mode transport for $2.50

Shopped on the way home

Dinner: Moroccan chicken tagine

Brown the Moroccan spiced chicken. In the tagine start layering - cinnamon quills and onion rings at the bottom. Browned chicken laid on top - keeping the pieces off the bottom of the pan. A bit of chicken stock

Start layering - chicken below and then veges in the sequence they will cook. Carrots and sweet potato and garlic slices in the stock - the zucchini and leek slices above

Last layers are the dried fruit and preserved lemon (Google how to make your own). Bang the lid on and let it simmer away a good half hour. The shape of the tagine cone does the work - steam away

Served with quinoa/amaranth mix. Recipes normally do couscous

Thanks for the @OurPick. It some times helps to be a tourist in one’s own city. I have done very little walking like this around the harbour. Will do more especially as a senior I get subsidised train and bus and ferry travel.
