Gordon streets and Blackbutt Creek orchids walk : July 31 2025
Another grey rainy day. Do inside stuff like upgrading PHP version for my main blog site. Went through some of the new PLR training too. Sky was playing me - cloud - rain - blue. Did get out walking. Made two turnarounds - umbrella and rain jacket
Started out the walk in two minds- beat get some suburb photos in place - single camellia
Golden friesia thinks it is spring
More spring feeling. They know more than us maybe on July 31 - depth of winter
More spring - was about this point that I decided to walk Blackbutt Creek
Learned something new this week. This trailing moss that is all over the trees here is an invasive weed from South America and wiping out out vegetation - lichen behind is most likely local
Walked across the golf course - no players around so I walked across more than around
Down this path for example - a heron in shot
Zoomed in and walked down a bit. Green looks like a pond
Back to lichen views - moss mixed in
The purpose of the regular walks on a track is to find what orchid things are happening - budding mayfly orchid. Rain was teeming down = not good photo. Next week will be sunny and flower will be open
Budding chiloglottis orchid. Had thought they would have flower spikes by now
Blackbutt Creek tumbling away from up above - was noisy
Walked back to get photos of trim greenhoods out of the rain - pterostlyis concinna
Worked around to get photos of the labellum - not good enough to see the key feature
Hard pressed to get right around to the back as there was this huge colony of chiloglottis orchid leaves stopping access
A sliver only
More front on but hooded by the helmet. The good thing is I know what they are. Better is I found a cluster of chiloglottis leaves next door. I will see them flowering in a few weeks
Walk back had a few white flowers - woolsia pungens
Budding chiloglottis orchid on the point closest to the start of the track. Nit seen these flowering - only 4 plants all budding
A few track posed photos - woolsia pungens - though this one could be NSW coral heath flower
No doubting pungens for this track side photo
And hakea for this
Was a dry and a wet walk. Carrying an umbrella on a fire trail is just fine
Spent an hour trying to replace spikes on my golf shoes - with a 6 month project I am looking to start playing golf again. Took a while to get first one out - and the new ones did not fit. Plan B
Did walk to shops when I got home - needed a few things - did not need the steps
