Mayfly orchids in Terrey Hills save an orchid hunt : August 11 2025
Still have an East Coast Low hanging around. Look out the window - mostly blue sky. Read the forecast - showers on the coastal fringe. Nothing smarter to do than drive toward the coast to do an orchid walk. Looking for spring orchids

A message for spring - mimosa flowers

A message from the last few weeks. Rains a lot and every track becomes a creek

Pink spider grevillea

Plenty of purple pea flowers - they climb way up other plants

Creek running hard off the Perimeter Track - Ku-ring Gai Chase NP

Plenty of Sydney boronia flowering all along the track

Time for reflection - has been a lot of rain

Hibbertia - a few of those - note the close cluster of the petals

Tiny grevillea flower opening

Snake orchid up high - a known spot. Seed pods is still fresh - some time before the seeds pop

Walked a long way in search of sun orchids - Wilkins Fire Trail - no luck

Purple dampiera

The next hibbertia - more like an old style Dutch fort - told you to take note

Not walked this trail for a while. It does have a wet section in the middle section. Wet today and more reflection time

A still day helps reflection photos

A close up of new heath flower season

The tiny fingers of this new season flower

A bit more of the white flower season. Name does not match but the colour does

Grey spider grevillea

Better focus on the fort shaped hibbertia. They are tough to get focus as the yellow grabs the light

Succulent style pea flower- different to all the others - the stem is like a succulent

Amazing eucalyptus wax colour - bright red

No luck with spring orchids. Headed into rain forest segment to see what I can find . Cobra greenhood on last legs

Pterostylis grandifloris in better shape - a week to go

Was expecting to find a colony of mayfly orchids - no idea if this was same spot as last time. Saw the tiniest spike out of a heart shaped leaf and there they were. A colony of at least 10 plants. The only photo that worked was this triple header

The end of the helmet orchid season - only ever seen spurred helmet orchids here

Spider web under a log reflecting with the rain drops
Makes for a good walk despite the lack of spring orchids. Always good to have a dry day with a wet forecast

Nice Terrey Hills orchid hunt! 🌸 Those mimosa flowers are a great sign spring is on its way. ✨
Nice pictures
Are you enjoying the rain over there?
I really enjoyed reading about your orchid-hunting trip. Even though you had some trouble finding the spring orchids at first, it’s amazing that you still got to see so many beautiful flowers and even discovered a rare colony of mayfly orchids. It shows how nature can surprise us and make the journey worth it, no matter the challenges.
