Bkackbutt Creek orchids - first walk in a few days : August 23 2025

A very disturbed night with weird dreams. Was sleeping better as the cold backs off - not quite firing on all cylinders. Did need to do some shopping - did the essentials only on a walk up.

Was keen to walk the bush with blue in the sky but not feeling great. Drove down to the local track to save the 2000 steps each way to get there. I miss the 400 we used to have. Photo shows the blue and a lot of water on the fire trail

Saw a flash of cockatoo wings below the track - walk along a bit - see the head of cockatoo sticking out of a hole. Watched for a while - soon there were two heads sticking out. Who knows how a bird that big flies head first into a hole the width of its body. Fold the wings and head first

Mission for the day was chiloglottis opens. A few budding - days away - note the smooth edges and smoothness of the leaf. Not veined

One of about 6 plants in this spot. Surprised these are not open yet as they get the afternoon sun

Trim greenhood colony still got flowers - try to photograph different each time. This one is closing - cannot see the full labellum. Photo work is not easy as there are two colonies of orchids here - hard to get spots without trampling

Did get low enough to get the forked labellum - pterostylis concinna

Right next door is a chiloglottis orchid budding

Wandered down a rock going down to the creek - a whole cascade of chiloglottis orchids. It is a new find

A bit further along - budding. Leaf edges are a bit ruffled and there are veins

At last a flower open. Not quite fitting the profile of common ant orchid - calli only go part way down the labellum. Too late for the other obvious candidates

Front on. The handlebars seem to confirm ID as chiloglottis formicifera

As always each walk is a recce for what to look for next time

And each walk brings new things. Saw this little white flower emering with the hairy leaves. Chose this flower for photo as it required less bending. This one had the little green spider standing right over the flower

Another flash of tiny white with the same hairy leaves. The guru ID system suggests these are besrd heaths. One flower is bearded but the other is smooth. Looks like to variants of a species

Got the steps done. Glad I took the body as the body overheated on the uphill bits

Dinner: Cottage pie with potato and pumpkin mash. First time cooking with a bit of dairy for a week
