Ku-ring Gai Chase NP spring orchids : August 25 2025
Had a bad night with big sliding door noises from the apartment above from about 6 am. Never been a morning person - this makes the whole journey worse. Had an idea for a drive and walk and shop day. Did that but drove a bit closer than the first plan to walk Ku-ring Gai Chase NP - spring orchids
Walk first - a golden shower of pea flowers in fab light
First of the spring orchids on this track - small waxlip orchid - caladenia glossodia. This is a weird sector - only ever find one flower but do find one every year
The buds I saw last week are now open with two plants close by - spotted sun orchid
Stages of opening - thelymitra ixioides
Spotted sun orchid without spots. Key to ID is the column
Trackside view
Patersonia iris opening. They overlap in timing with sun orchids - never seen them this pale. They are normally a strong purple
Grey spider grevillea
Hakea and blue sky. The latter been missing a few days
Pink spider grevillea
Sundew flower - drosera
Was nit expecting to see a banksia flower still going
A flash of blue - not a sun orchid - dampiera purpurea
A flash of pink- NSW coral heath flower- a bit early
Fungal fun
Under the big powerlines. Photo is a bit of a tribute photo. When they cleared under the lines last season, they destroyed two waratah trees. Well the tree framed by the pylon is a waratah

The cluster attracted a lot of insects
A lot smaller and a bit more gloss
Ground level pea flower in pale yellow
Found the second glossodia flower of the day - also one only
Pea flower in matching purple on ground level. These normally climb - nothing to climb
Two tone pea flower growing on a succulent blade
Went down a side track hoping to find caladenia orchids - no luck but did find more sun orchids
Thelymitra ixioides - this one got spots
Grand trees and a blue sky
Waxflower. Somehow this was the one I chose to photograph - there is a pale creature almost matching flower colour. It scooted off - a spider
Never tire of sun orchids
A fully open patersonia iris. Faded colour is consistent across all I saw. Going to guess the big rains over the last week has subdued the normal colour processes - watered down
Did the shopping after the walk. Dinner was a look after yourself thing - a bit Scottish - sausages, black pudding, sliced potato and a fried egg.
