Berowra Valley orchid train, ride, walk : August 28 2025
A blue sky day - had to push a reluctant body to execute a days old plan. Catch a train and ride the bike to walk a trail looking for sun orchids. It is sunny but very windy
Had to pump up tyres - not ridden this bike in a while - weeks and weeks. Ride is about 3 kms from Berowra Station. A flash of spring colours - Sydney boronia and pea flowers framed by a scribbly gum
Did find sun orchids budding on a side track - not open
Walked a bit further along the main trail beyond where I normally turn off. I knew I would find sun orchids - this one had heaps of buds but none open
A mix of spring - grey spider grevillea and a backdrop of yellow pea flowers
Yellow as in these pea flowers
A splash of white of the fringe myrtle - star flower
Mega sized pea flower - tookna while to get a focused photo
The extended side walk did produce a sun orchid - not one open today
A little less windy this side in the bigger trees. A few branches did fall around my ears. Fab display in pink of Sydney boronia
Longer walk this way paid off - the first flowering orchid for the day - small waxlip orchid - one of a few plants. No known as caladenia glossodia
Keeping with the purple theme - purple pea flower close to the ground
Took another side track heading down to the water. There were flying duck orchids last year. These side trips happen for a reason - the first waratah flower of the season. Not yet fully developed. That helps as the fully developed ones tend to be well above head height
Found a less windy spot to get a good photo of a red spider grevillea. The red is intense
Starburst flower - my name
A few upside flowers - my name - showing. Turned this one close to the ground up to get a photo. Worked well as normally these shots are taken against the light into the sun
A few hibbertia showing - maybe the hardest largish flower to photograph. Yellow grabs the light
Budding form of the hibbertia - less yellow
Snow wreath flower - tiny - a little bigger than the head of one of those plastic pins your mum had
Walk does have some fab trees - view of the blanched sides across to Cowan side of the creek
Early showing for narrow-leafed hemigenia - also small
Context photo - more threads of Great North Walk - done a few slices this week
Did find another waxlip orchid - this one on track edge in the bush was half the size of the others but is fully formed
Back to the main trail. View northwards across the Hawkesbury River toward Arcadia
Dampiera purpurea
Railway bridge at Berowra Station
Do love the $2.50 train deal as a retiree. Travel anywhere for justb$2.50. Take the bike free and explore more widely
Ride record looks like 39 kms - trust was 16 minutes moving and 6 kms cycled. Good news is I got on the bike in Sydney town
Dinner: Did cook chicken curry for something to do. In a depressed state of mind. Cycle and walk and cook out of that

Would there be a danger of snakes in those Sydney parks ?
I do see them occasionally. We are coming into the risky time as they come out of hibernation and are a bit slow moving. Mostly I am focused looking for orchids on the edges of the tracks, I see them first

This sounds like such a refreshing adventure. The way you enjoyed the flowers and nature while also reflecting on life is really inspiring. Sometimes being outdoors is the best therapy.
