Sun orchids from Mount Ku-ring Gai : September 8 2025
Got a blue sky day and warming up. Coming down the week is a week of rain - best get out and enjoy the sun and warmth. Took a while to get moving with ideas of a drive, walk, shop. Chose around midday to do a train walk thing.
Got on the train and changed my mind about the walk. Travel one station further for a short walk into Ku-ring Gai Chase NP - target summer orchids
Got the first within 50 metres of entering the park. The sun orchids like temps over 25C - well over that
Lots of wax flowers open
The other blue contender is dampiera purpurea
Pea flowers. Met an old guy taking photographs. He has not walked this track in a lot of years - shared an orchid lesson
We talked about this cluster of flowers - I saw the bugs flying and got the photo
Found this orchid budding - probably a different type of sun orchid
Hit a big cluster of sun orchids on the other side of the track - facing west is better for flowering
A big cluster - counted the flower spikes - 3 in all. Spotted sun orchid - thelymitra ixioides
Close up
A different configuration - single spike with at least 8 flowers - you count - more than 10
Big wide open track - not a lot of orchid stuff along the track - not smashed by the track work this year
Saw a few orchids folded back like this - maybe drying out but more likely blown back by the big wind
Wax flowers across Cowan Creek below
Walked to the edge of the drop off. Big walk down to next orchid spots
Heading back - hibbertia
Wattle flower
Leptospermum squarrosum - did two photos - this one in the sun came out better. Enough colours other than white in the centre to keep focus right
Pea flower - the large one
Sydney boronia
Golden beetles making more on the big pea flower
Pink spider grevillea
Sun orchid on the way back deeper in the bush
Drumsticks flower close to being a drumstick
Starburst flower - my name
Track photo with pink spider grevillea
Another folded back sun orchid
Close up. Never seen this before
A sun orchid with only the faintest sign of spots
Walked a big loop through the suburb to check other bush access - found a waratah flowering in a garden
Station photo - toilets are locked. Building has a chimney. Guess in the old times you could sit in a warm waiting room and go to the loo.
Stopped in at shops on way home from station - a few essentials
Got the steps done - cooked BBQ for my dinner. Opened a 20 year old bottle of Semillon from Kelman Vineyard. Was on the wine committee when we decided on the wine. Semillon ages well - tends to get toasty - bit this one has not - at least 5 more years
Brings to end an emotional day. My wife's father was cremated today - as per his wishes - no ceremony
