Flying ducks in Berowra Valley NP : September 17 2025
A lovely blue sky day - got moving to catch a train - mission - flying duck orchids
First time on the bike in Sydney in a while. Local access roads are not safe - get the train. Really sad for someone who loves riding out the front door and doing the kms
Took the train and cycled the few kms to Turner Rd fire trail - sun orchids first up
New life in a fold of a tree
There were a lot of sun orchids - maybe 50 or more - checked every one
Details of lobe and column are the same - details are different
No spots
Each walk is a recce walk - cryptostlyis leaves - will spare you the sun orchids- saw maybe 100
Framed by the trees
Part of the recce walk idea - 4 spikes coming up for dipodium orchids. Given the dark colour of the spikes going to suggest dipodium punctatum
Grey spider grevillea - sometimes called woolly
Red spider grevillea
Cluster of sundew flowers
Tried to get views across the valley - did nit work that way but the pea flowers are lovely
Sun orchid side on
Slender rice flower also side on
Walk plan was to follow Great North Walk as the flying duck orchids are up this way. Saw the bud to the left of the sign first - then saw the open flower
No need for a leaf backdrop. The sign post is doing that. Flying duck orchid - caleana major
Side on
This bug was on the sign too
Went down a side tracknti check the waratah I saw last week - now fully open
View from the top
Small waxlip orchid - maybe the one I saw last walk
Budding flying duck orchids - a few in frame
Sydney boronia
Did find a 2nd cluster of flying duck orchids. Photo work was hard as the light was in a hard place
Did find a new cluster of small waxlips orchids in a new spot
Caladenia glossodia - twins
A tiny flash of white - epacris - heath flower
Drumsticks flower
First kunzea flower of the season
Fringe myrtle flower
Hibbertia flower
Found this sun orchid flower on the ground - makes for a close up of the column
Narrow-leafed hemigenia
Starburst - different to the previous myrtle - need to check IDs
Leptospermum squarrosum
Bulbous form of the scribbly gum
View across to Cowan from the start of the fire trail
Perfect framing for this sun orchid
Thelymitra ixioides is what was in the frame
Budding bearded orchid close to the start point
Zoomed in
Stepped back
Was good to get out on the bike. I do hate that I have to take a train to start a ride BUT that is the way to stay safe. Nice days make up for that
Dinner: Italian meatballs - no photos

Great pics! Those sun orchids look amazing. Worth the train trip to Turner Rd 👍
