Blackbutt Creek Gordon offers up 4 orchid types : September 29 2025

A slow and warm day. Kept busy all morning ring doing investing stuff - Monday is like this. Still felling the downs with a funeral coming up tomorrow.

Walked down to local track on Blackbutt Creek hoping to find sun orchids open - suns bit low after 3 pm for that. Did find this bearded orchid on the low side of the track. Purple bearded orchid - calochilus robertsonii

Context photo gives an idea of location - two metres below the track and about 45° slope - took some risk to get the photos

Lots of tiny yellow pea flower clusters

Progress report on the sun orchids on a rock - a few days to open

Right there was this bearded orchid - also calochilus robertsonii. Need to check my records to see if I saw these the last two years

Right next to the track and those rocks = note for next time

Mini form of Sydney boronia - there were bugs but none posing for photos

A few ant orchids - a lot in fact - common ant orchid - chiloglottis formicifera

Four in frame with the distinctive eaves showing below

And more flowing down where the water goes

Now for the other variant - chiloglottis trapeziformis with calli on top part of labellum only

Only two photos made it - low light foes that - diamond ant orchid

A bit more front on

Neat little white flower - half the size of a US penny - not noticed it before

Long walk along dead ground to next orchid cluster - also chiloglottis formicifera

A different pea flower - looks likes a ring of the moon in the centre

Fab afternoon light for this pea flower shot

Starburst flower (my name)

Hypericum - reducing light helps for these photos - they grab the sun

One slender rice flower flowering

Seeding nodding greenhood in a new spot

Close up photos of this chiloglottis formicifera did not work. Been checking this spot for two months - one flower open in about 20 plants and none other budding

Literally 2 metres higher I saw this greenhood rosette. There were at least 10 seeded flower spikes - nodding greenhood. Never noticed them in the last 2 years

Walked the steep track up to the golf course - first flannel flower of the season still showing a bit of green

And right bear the top was this bearded orchid - also a new spot - same as the others

A bit of work to get around for a front on photo but enough for ID

Turned into a good walk. Good mind zone time to get ready for tomorrow - a funeral for a cycling friend.

Did cook spaghetti bolognese for dinner and did tidy up the remnants of the party yesterday
