Darkes Forest orchids on a pass through drive : October 7 2025
Worked out a plan to recover from leaving some stuff (computer power supply) behind. Looked at train and bus timetables. Saw an orchid post from an NP I could go past on a drive - make a two day road trip looking for orchids
First stop to walk a fire trail in Dharawal NP on Darkes Forest Rd
Walked this trail before - hoping for bearded, sun and leek orchids
A bit of gum nut fruit colour
A new flower find - a few drop shapes and one flower open - looks like a dyanella
A star burst of pink - maybe a grevillea
Drumsticks flower
Sun orchid finished - was hoping to find some open
One closer to opening - was a cool day - no chance of opening
Lots and lots of pea flowers in purple

Another new flower for me - little white bells
Hibbertia - in yellow bright
Lots of sundew flowers
A tiny flash of white - need to look it up

Did find some flying ducks - a few in different places

Grand tree on the turn around point. Previous walks have shown the orchids are on the south side - fewer expected on the way back

A bunch in frame. Stopped at apple orchard to buy beer - then drive south. Had enough time to go for a ride to Seven Mile Beach NP

Love the quiet of this bush with the sound of the sea
Stopped by the beach - lots of white horses. Looking north to Gerroa
Did spend some time at the beach - there were whales right out on the horizon
A bonus to ride a few kms at the end of a travel day. Cooked BBQ for dinner
