Blackbutt Creek walk and ride for new bearded orchids : October 10 2025
The day broke out blue and warming up. Was not very motivated to get out for a train/bike thing. Got the week's investing accounts up to date - always needed after a few days away. Did get out on the bike - ride down to Blackbutt Creek and then walk
Evidence. Park the bike up and walk - a few orchids to check
An explosion of flowers - too bad this is a garden escapee - privet
Lots of slender rice flowers
Been watching these two orchids on the top of the rock. Thought they were sun orchids - bearded orchids - front one has since seeded and the back one has been nibbled
Close bybwas this bearded orchid - now open. Red bearded orchid - calochilus paludosus. Plant was just two inches tall but fully developed makes it well below normal. Maybe the rocky base was to blame
Yep. This rocky base
Interesting little white flower with 3 crowns - no idea what it is
A few common ant orchids still flowering - chiloglottis formicifera
Was hoping to find sun orchids open. The dsy was warm enough and this one was on the sunny side
A few more budding but quite some days behind
Walked all the way to Keparra St access - still only one common ant orchid flowering here - light a bit low for good photo
No shortage of plants - at least 30 but only one flowering and not a single bud
The one advantage of coming down by bike is I have to walk back to the bike. Did want to check bearded orchids I saw budding last walk. What I thought was two plants was three close by
A photo set up - one out of focus - back flower in focus with great over the shoulder light on red bearded orchid
A bonus right there was the first corea of the season - note the fine hairs
A few more red bearded orchids on the way back - photo of an opener showing the very distinctive tape that comes out from below the labellum
Was doing the ride for Kids Cancer - hard to know if it was Batman or pirate day or a bit of both
One more bearded orchid to wrap the orchid hunt up
When I walked down the track there were no branches fallen - well this big one fell while I was down there
A foot in diameter. The hole in the track is a foot deep. The 3 segments would weigh at least 50 kgs - direct hit = dead. Clearly not time for my number
Trigger flowers just opening
Checked every cryptostylis leaf down and up and found just one flower spike. It has some time to go
Ride done. Walk done. Orchids found including a few new flowering. Pleased I went out for Kids Cancer - donate here https://mclnks.com/kidscancerride - or send me some Hive or HBD - memo GCC and I will make sure the funds get to the charity
Dinner: My wife had a big corporate games day. Not interested in food - nailed some leftover curry and rice for me.
