Hornsby Heights train - ride - walk : October 20 2025
Got a warm day lining up. Had an idea for a train - ride - walk. Did not work out to plan. Plan B - train and them ride to walk Hornsby Heights - 3 orchids in mind
Took a different to normal - perfect chance to get a photo of namesake street named after the first G-G of NSW
Took a loop road around a reserve not walked before. Walked it - no orchids. Did find a seeded orchid on the loop out - probably a bearded orchid. Always good to find an orchid in a new place - always hopeful
Hopeville maybe
Got to the Outlook FT in Berowra Valley NP - parks have trashed the edges wiith their track work
A few trigger flowers triggered
Grey spider grevillea - not really grey but they are woolly
Did find a budding cryptostylis orchid - their season is coming
Leptospermum squarrosum - normally a magnet for bugs. Not this time
Yellow starburst - my name
Did find the snake orchid I was after. I found it a few seasons ago a long way down the single track that drops down to the creek
Only one flower spike. They normally grow on scribbly gums - not this one

Looks like this orchid will not be seeding - a bug has drilled in and eaten the seeds
Pale flax lily. Flower is superb tiny - first for the season
First of the purple fan flowers for the season - just one
Corea always presents a photography challenge - subject is narrow - this one partly in shade did give some interesting shading. Hairy they are

A cluster of budding cryptostylis subulata in a known spot
Tiny lobelia right where the bike was parked is also a new season show
Decided to ride back to Asquith station and get train from there. Always a bit quieter from there compared to Hornsby
Did get to snap one of the new Newcastle trains passing through
Friend over for dinner - made chicken cacciatore
