Gorsvenor Fire Trail train - ride - walk : October 21 2025
A coolish day forecast with a hot obe tomorrow. Best get out on the bike today. For a change the trains were running to plan

Take the train up to Wahroonga and ride to NP. Do a walk and ride home

Context photo - was the 1080 laid

Firet orchid - a seeded bearded orchid in a known spot

Lots of milk maids flowering

Lots of these flowering too - patersonia iris

Lambertia formosa - proving that photographing these is hard - where to focus

Part one of the mission was to check progress of the yellow leek orchids - plants now have full flower spikes

This one is closer to flowering. The topnhas got caught in the bract below - hence the big loop. Chose not to do surgery. As the spike pushes unit will break the holding point. Prasophyllum flavum

A different perspective for today's photos - the hollows at the bottom of the trees. This tree has been hollowed out by the ants in the centre

Mission two. See if the snake orchids are flowering. They are - high up above the ground with heaps of spikes.

Back to hollows - this one of the tree with the snake orchids. I chose not to climb the tree for close ups

As close as zoom will allow - cymbidium suave

As close as an old man is safe to go

Did find a flying duck orchid between the track and the snake orchid. Not seen one here before = a new site

Walked across to side of the track known to have flying duck orchids. Good to find aone have survived the hazard reduction burn earlier this season. This double header is a great example. Took a while to get a photo somewhat in focus as it was windy and the flower is 2 foot off the ground

A cryptostylis orchid also survived the burn - no spike yet

What one can bank on after a burn is lobelia dentata - the burn triggers the germination

Side on shot

Stepped back photo shows the burn evidence

A weevill got to this flying duck - caleana major

Similar evidence on this budding flying duck

Took a while to get photos working for this flying duck. How to get light in the right place. Photo into the light

Photo across the light from behind

St Andrews Cross spider

Back to the tree hollows

Hard to tell when this hollow began. Before or after the limb was removed. Going to guess it was before

Somehow the trees divert all their fluid flows around the hollows. Tree keeps going

Had to add a dampiera purpurea to the purple flower feeling

Lobelia dentata - a lot smaller than the previous ones

On the way back found this seeded bearded orchid. It has seeded directly below the known spot on the other side of the track. Seeds have come doen the slope with the water flow. Of note is the plants above did not show the last two seasons

Walk done. Rode the bike back home. Safe enough to ride the Pacific Highway down hill through to the Pymble Bends. Broke a few personal records on the way. Always easy on a quiet road.
Walked up to shops after the ride - a few things needed. As it happens our dinner guest had to work overtime
Late night doing options trades
