Hyacinth orchids and a rare find in Ku-ring Gai Chase NP: January 6 2026

Was a struggle to get moving the day after the memorial service. I decided to do the sort of thing John would have done. Take the train up the line and walk into the National Park. Not true - he would have taken the car and phoned a few mates for a ride or a walk. I deal with this stuff better on my own

Yep - take the train and walk the one km into the NP - could not decide which was the perspective photo of Mount Colah station - straight down the line

Walked a track down into the village from the station past a bit of bush. No orchids but did find these two bits of painted pottery - no labels behind

Found a cluster of cryptostylis leaves before hitting the park boundary. All spikes seeded - cryptostylis subulata - green backed leaves

First flowering orchids were not far past that sign - slender hyacinth orchid. Walking in gave me the chance - a bit deep off the track to see from the bike

This one looked more white than the photo suggests. No midge orchids showing down that side trail - change of mission - horned orchids

NSW coral heath flower - epacris pulchella

2nd orchid of the day - bonnet orchid - cryptostylis erecta. Saw that and the brain program changed a step into known territory. Maybe this time

Bang. Got one flower in the known spot - cryptostylis hunteriana. Last flower now - was away last week - not showing the week before. This is a special find as the orchid is endangered

One more hyacinth orchid on the way back. Did not find the horned orchids my friend saw. I did send her the location for the hunteriana and a spotting video. She raced dien after work - a new find for her. There are two more plants close by - could not see them

Turned into a big walk on a warm day - next time - take the bike on the train

My brother-in-law and his wife staying with us overnight. Cooled a BBQ dinner - we sat outside - was a good family get together in troubling times (not from my side) - family stuff socks when there is money to be scrabbled over
