Bobbin Head Track walk - more of s yellow walk than anything : January 22 2026

Had a plan for the day to go and get tennis shoes. Original idea was to use public transport. 50 minutes vs 14 in the car. Morning drifted away - used the car with a National Park walk on the way back

Sure pleased of the change of plan. Shop did not have shoes in my size - who thought tennis shoes got that complicated - width, sole colour, hard vs synthetic surface. And there is a model change coming up - wait 4 weeks. Would not have been happy doing the 50 minutes back with no shoes

Chose this track in Ku-ring Gai Chase NP hoping to find midge orchids - I know a few spots - NSW coral heath flower to start

Hibbertia flower close to the ground - a bit different to the ones I am used to. A trailing guinea flower

Banksia flowering - this one with smooth edges to the leaf and a bit more bullet like

Lots of pine-leafed geebung flowering

Feeling like another yellow flower day - pea flower

Conesticks flowers still going well this side

Splashes of pink and the eriostemon start flowering

A few wattle flowers still going

Under the powerlines is often a good spot for midge orchids - they like the open grassy bits. No luck here

A late opener for the leptospermum squarrosum - only saw one

A different banksia flower - less bullet like and serrated leaves - banksia serratum

Back under the powerlines. When they remade the main trail there was a lot of sand moved on this side track. No luck finding the 3 midge orchids that have come up here every year for years. Typically takes two seasons after a big disruption - if they come back

Back to yellow - goodenia

Did meet the angophora lady. You may recall photos of angophora flowers with bags around them - she is doing seeds study

The only orchid find of the day - seeded tongue orchids - cryptostylis subulata. Found only one plant - last year there were well over 20

Walked back under the small powerline - no luck with midge orchids but did find a few purple fringe lilies

Was weird weather - blue sky - full cloud - patches of blue - full cloud. Stayed dry which was a bonus - no umbrella

Walk done - steps done - no tennis for at least 4 weeks.

Did cook dinner late - duck fried rice using up the Chinese duck from a few days back
