Back to Seven Mile Beach NP tiny flowers : January 23 2026

A late night - a slow start - we were on the road just after 11 to drive down south. Looking forward to a few nights away and not being woken up at 5 am by the toilet flush upstairs. We did stop at Bulli for a coffee on the way down

Was enough time to ride down to Seven Mile Beach NP - more about getting a ride in but a little hopeful for one orchid. These little flowers just starting - they are smaller than half the size of a US penny

Walked down the main access track hoping to find chiloglottis seminuda in a few know spots. Their season is beginning. Photo tells me that school holidays are here. The kids have made ramps - this one to cross a fallen tree. Quite a few ramps made - deep enough to break a fire truck axle

This side went through a hazard reduction burn last season - the cabbage trees go gang busters after that

Did find one hyacinth orchid on the edge of the burned section. None in the known spots that got burned. They will come back next season perhaps depending on how hot the ground got

Zoomed in with a bit of sun - common hyacinth orchid - dipodium variegatum

Walked down the main track a long way and did find one more hyacinth orchid. A strange thing happening - flowers below closing and the ones up top not keen to open

Maybe the plant did not like the days over 40C the week before

Noticed this huge tree - its trunk is well over a metre - maybe close to two across. Well over double the others around. Turned back about here

Spied this beauty - it is quite rare down this way - yellow-anthered rock lily - happy with the photo as the flower is tiny

Cicada husk - there was a fair orchestra going on

Was pleased to find a bigger version of the Australian bluebell. First few were smaller and I could not get a photo in focus. Deleted them

Always good to get a ride in. Was not happy to be close to being run over by bikes on the track. I was on my knees checking leaves - got yelled at "what are you doing down there?". Not sorry mate - we will walk our bikes by.

We went over to friends for a simple dinner - good to have a day off cooking.
