Fringe orchid and pollinators Mt Colah way : February 11 2026

Cooking up for a warm day. Got a bit organised to get out on the bike for a train - bike - walk to look for midge orchids on Mt Colah side of Ku-ring Gai Chase NP. Organised enough to pump up tires.

NSW coral heath flower - themes for the day - pink and bugs

Peach-faced tea tree flower - always a haven for bugs - one ant visiting

Midge orchid I saw last week is now fully open. Corunastylis fimbriata with two bugs carrying pollen

Working hard to get focus on the flower and then up the spike comes a bug with pollen

Pleased with this photo - took a few shots. The flower is tiny - a little wider across than a match head - can see the fluffy form. Small-leafed white beard

Found some fringed midge orchids in new spots - a little further up the track than previously seen

The patch has been scratched through. Maybe wallabies or bandicoot or humans. The plant left was protected by the grassy stuff

Found the next midge orchid type on the walk back - Rupps midge orchid - corunastylis ruppii

The rock in the track marks the spot - found here quite a few years back and now back

Gum sap suggests the trees are stressed

Got the eye open for bugs. Tiny insects all clustered around this yellow lump. Not thinking a bud as there is only one. May be an insect cocoon

The corunastylis woollsii seen last week has seeded.

The one behind which was budding last week has also seeded but has snapped off. One budding to the right has yet to flower. Photo was out of focus

Silver top mushroom. Tried to peel off the white bit - peeled like a mushroom skin. Not tissue paper

Had it in mind to ride home from here. Train times meant I would have a long wait at the closest station. Would normally ride to Hornsby Station. A level ride on safe roads. A better idea - ride one station further downhill

Had committed to meet a friend in the city to talk stocks. Luckily could be in ac. Met my wife for a drink after her SteerCo and to celebrate 17 years since we met
