First signs of endangered brittle midge orchid for 2026 : February 24 2026

Got to love our upstairs neighbour shuffling stuff around from 11pm until I went to bed just before 1am. Doing my head in as I cannot bang our sliding doors when my wife is trying to sleep. If I was home alone it would be all guns blazing - loud music, sliding doors, bangs on the windows. Sets the mood for the day - get out

Took the bike on the train - photo shot at Gordon Station

The mission is midge orchids - one in particular - normally flowering February but seen earlier on this track. A flash of purple to start right in the middle of the track

This shot got me interested. Looks like the flowers on the midge orchid I am looking for. As it happens it was a seed from the tree above

Did find a spike - bud just at the top. The only bud showing. Brittle midge orchid - genoplesium baueri

Hiding in these fallen branches where I found my first unassisted ones all those years ago. Sure hope there are more. All the spots higher up have been scraped out - wallabies most likely

At least the purple fringe lilies are doing well. For my friend Landie - she loves them - purple is her colour

Found a few new spots for corunastylis ruppii

Close up

A friend said to take photos of leaves - there are none. The flower spike grows through a sheath which is the leaf in the early days - then it just shows a bump on up the spike

Seeded form

Another plant - not seen before

Corunastylis ruppii

Peach-flowered tea tree

Epacris pulchella - NSW coral heath flower

Double decker banksia

Last week this patch had three scrapes and one orchid. Now four scrapes - wallaby got fed on orchid tubers

Grey spider grevillea. Ever wonder what comes next?

This is the seeded form - not noticed before

Pea flower just closing up

Hibbertia from 2nd part of the track

The one fringed midge orchid on this sidenis just finishing off

A bit of side on shot

Front on - last days

Easy to get confused on the next flowers - rounded edges of woollsia pungens

Pointy edges of epacris pulchella

TooK a lot of banksia flower photos - only one in focus

Monitor lizard heading up the tree - small one

Did get another banksia in focus - a pin leafed version

Orchid spotter eyes were on - hard to know what - maybe a bearded orchid. Not seen them here before

Good news is there are a bunch

Twin fringe lilies

Signs of season change - mushroom time

Decided to ride home all the way. It is downhill and safe enough until a fuckwit overtook me. Going down hill at the speed limit with a double white line and a car upcoming and speed humps. Was spitting chips as I got to roundabout below just as he did. Was tempted to tap the roof. Chose not to as I would have decked the fuckwit when he got out the car. Did decide to finish the trip home by train. Mind has to be 100% to deal with traffic

My wife was asked to look after her grandson - drove down with snacks - had a play in the park. Floss flower came from the park. We had fun.

Nice glass of wine with his mum. First time doing that since his parents split

Did cook dinner late - simple sausage BBQ plus salad
