Day 1 Road Trip - and ant orchids bonus : March 10 2026

Wake to packing dreams - no surprise as have been getting ready for the road trip all of Monday. At least everything is stashed in piles and the gear choices are made. Did a quick shop - took the car as I have to bring the car to apartment to load.

Easy enough pack - load all the gear in one bag and put a bit of food and panniers in the car. Set up the roof rack and load the bike on the roof. A bit later leaving than planned. Was directed on a different route than normal. Worked well as it knocked 15 minutes off quickest time and had no tolls. Stopped at this lookout first time ever - been past this at least 100 times. Looking north to Royal National Park - great cloud forms for colour

Took the time to get the new bike rack for front panniers sorted for the bike - best done ahead of time. Did have to take it off as there is a chance the bike with front wheel off will not fit on the roof rack

Mowed the lawns - grown a lot since neighbour cut them last week. And had enough time to go for a ride to check a new saddle. Always risky to try a new saddle but the old one is not great

And a chance to walk Seven Mile Beach NP - mushroom time - mission - my almanac was saying it is time for choglottis orchids

Silver top mushroom suggests a different theme

Lots and lots of native violets - always a photo for my granddaughter Violette. Will see her tomorrow

Not the orchid bud I was expecting to see .

Colouring just showing suggests dipodium variegatum a few weeks late

Mushroom type three for the day - this has quite a few forms as it develops - eventually start to ruffle up and out

Found the orchid leaves on the way back. Lots of plants on this side of the track. In previous years, they were plentiful on the other side. Set back by the track work and the hazard reduction bu

Yes. Keep looking - has to be one flower

Yes - a chiloglottis flower first for this season in Seven Mile Beach NP. Thinking chiloglottis diphylla based on form of calli down the labellum

And a yellow fungus on a fallen log. It wants to grab the light

A short ride to test the saddle - needs some adjusting to push the sit bones back a bit
