Cycle to Historic Car races at Port Phillip GP circuit : March 14 2026

Today was to be a tootle around Phillip Island day - staying in same place two days. As it happens the 100 year Historic Sports Car races are on at the GP circuit. Was in two minds but love motor racing and decided to go. Got a message from Ian - he wanted to go as has never been. Perfect

Easy 7 km ride to the circuit. Did take this shot of Ian photographing a Cape Barren goose. I hoed that it was telling Ian "I know you are wearing fluoro yellow but stay away from my girls". Little did I know the the goose has fluoro yellow flashes on its beak below the septum

Got to entrance point - $40 for all access pass BUT no bikes allowed. Leave them on the fence. Disappointing as I would have liked to work a circuit around the track. Did that and walked the Shannon's Walk past the array of historic cars - at least 500 cars. Entrance fee covered

Took a few shots - Ford Cortina - the car I learned to drive in

New and old Corvettes

A 50s Holden

Picture across the track to the pit lane building

Picture down the main straight - a car in shot

On walk back to build to lock my bike spied a version of my car - maybe 2 years youndlger than mine. Of note in NSW we cannot get H plates till the car is 30. 3 years to go for me

Start line action.

We worked our way down the track to check some corner action spots - opens out nice view of the sea and beach

Tail view of the fast bend above the beach

Walked to paddock area on pit lane - great shots down pit lane

Views up the hill to the track winding down to the main straight

Alfa Berlina - my wife had a 4 door version way back when

Ford GT40 in Gulf livery - my favourite as a kid

The best part was open access to pits and pitlane. Could wander anywhere and ask questions - chatted to the driver of this Brabham B29 - the model Jack Brabham won world championship as first driver in his own design - 5 minutes later the driver was racing

Was a great day out. A lot of standing. Just fab to see a whole cross section of cars across the years. The pit lane mingling was the best

Ian has a Morris - he found a Matchbox version. We chatted for ages with the lady driver of a 1931 Morris. Car had a Morris chassis and core engine and gear box

Out and back ride - a day well spent

Had dinner as a group in camp. Was a good session
