Meeniyan to Korumburra on rail trail. Drive to Foster : March 18 2026

Today, we ride back up the rail trail to Korumburra, where we started the ride a day drive down to Foster for the Australian Bike Friday gathering

Starting with a flowering gum frond found in the Meeniyan main street on the way to coffee shop

Yep - from the towering gums down the central reserve in front of the pub

Meeniyan community garden where we rejoin the GSRT heading north two or three towns today

Dahlia to greet us on our way

First trestle bridge is impressive but a bit fall down to ride along. No problem - they built a new trail bridge. I recall on Brisbane Valley Rail Trail one has to go down to creek bed and up in spots like this. Road bridge was a bit further to the left

Fossil beds were discovered when they put the new South Gippsland Highway in not that long ago

Next trestle bridge is not as long and still usable with a concrete deck added

Autumn approaches and there are mushrooms - maybe a gold top

And a yellow cap - now mushrooms are very topical around here as the Beef Wellington lady who was just convicted of murder with mushrooms comes from just up the road

Walked this nature reserve outside Koonwarra - hard to tell if this is a town or locality. We do know the store/cafe was closed - a few houses

Trail edges upward on a gentle grade with fabulous rolling hill views

This is dairy country. This herd had walked along the fence down to the bottom fence line as if it was milking time.

View opening up to the town of Leongatha across the valley. Time for a coffee stop half way

Found a coffee shop on the main street next door to the old Knights Garage building - no date showing. Guys at the table behind were talking motor racing. I asked if they were racing at the weekend. Yes. Set fastest laptime in their class in practice on Satruday in orange RX2 but got taken out in the race. We saw the dust cloud. I learned to drive in an RX2

A few shots in Leongatha main street. The telegraph office still an Australia Post outlet

An impressive memorial building. Did not cross the street to learn more

Back to the rail trail for the last 16 kms to Korumburra - bullet mushrooms. From my drive the other day I knew this was an up leg

Yep - the segment on the right. Not steep but another hour of up

Kept looking ahead to see the tops of the ridgeline - not this one but pleasing country to ride - trail shot

Hill shot - same tree

Ruby station site with Ruby Hall behind. Sad to not have the old station buildings standing

View up the trail at Kardella station

All that is left of the station

Rolling hill views keep coming. Just fab country to get one away from thinking about the grade. At least the grade has been easier than the road

The end of this leg does have the old station building - Korumburra Station being renovated.

The average speed tells its own story. Dropped down to caravan park to pick up my gear and load the car. Has been great to have support

Short drive to Foster for the next leg. Fabulous views at the top of the drop from the hills across to Wilson Promontory - fab on a clear day

Two shots needed. Steep drop down to the plain below - reference for the ride up tomorrow

In a cottage a few kms out of town with an English country garden feel.

Showered. Headed into town to shop for dinner and a few days provisions including alcohol free beer as I do need to drive to cabin. Stopped in caravan park to catch up with other riders. We are about 40 now. Did cook BBQ there - marked down T-bone was fab.
