Back to Seven Mile Beach NP - 4 orchid day : May 15 2026

The day's plan is to head down south for a several few days away. Drive Friday and come back Tuesday. I am always keen as it gets me closer to quiet places to cycle and walk. And might even get to see ky son and his kids.

We did fish and chips when we got to Shoalhaven Heads. Enough time for me to get on the bike to walk the bush - a few orchids perhaps. Native violet sets the tone - for my granddaughter Violette

Am hopeful of finding a few specific orchids in flower but always check what is coming. This colony of blunt greenhoods have survived the track work. Some weeks to go

Last few walks have seen a lot of the mosquito orchids with leaves leaving the ground and no flower spikes - two to show here

Mimosa flower - 4pm is a bit late to have light filled photos

First flowering orchid of the day - pixie caps orchid with the midge fly pollinator

Helmet orchid bud a bit further along than last walk shots - can see the burgundy colour emerging

Two acianthus orchids sending out flower spikes

2nd flower up - pterostylis concinna - trim greenhood. Not seen them that close to the start of the track

Matching rosette with a new bud coming

A bit more front on. Key to ID is the forked labellum. Hard to see in this shot but clear in the first

Another pixie caps orchid. Hard photo work for a small flower maybe a match heads wide and two long. The calli and green colour on the labellum are key to ID - acianthus fornicatus

Almost every one flowering had a fly in attendance. If you think the flower is small, the fly is tiny - not even a match head

Next size up on a helmet orchid bud

And again. This one has clues on ID. Can just see the bristles emerging as the helmet opens out

Greenhood rosette - no spike yet

Acianthus orchid with pollinator in attendance. Shot from below to get the column

Budding greenhood - most likely trim greenhood

Last stage of opening for the helmet orchid - corybas fimbriatus. Saw hundreds of leaves but only a few buds. Feels like a bumper season on the way

The next trim greenhood is a new spot - right on the track with quite a few plants

Sode on shot shows the forked labellum. Pterostlyis concinna

I knew it was the season but was not seeking these out - after 3 orchids found - celebrate a 4th one. Painted fingers orchids

Side on of caladenia picta - always the first caladenia to flower each season

Zoomed in

Pays to stop at each flowering orchid. Two midge flies - pollonia (the yellow spots) - a spider

First ride in a bit. Do love being able to hit quiet roads in minutes from the house

And the ride home offers up the best spot to photograph Coolangatta Mountain sunset

As we had fish and chips for lunch, no dinner cooking done. I nailed leftovers
