First season cobra greenhoods in Seven Mile Beach NP : May 18 2026
It is a grey day. Not geared up to get out on the bike early before the rain started. Plenty of investing accounts to after a busy options expiry. Thinking umbrella walk

Next best idea - take the car to walk the middle section of Seven Mile Beach. A violet for my granddaughter Violette to start

Got two specific orchid targets - budding acianthus orchid to start the search

Mushrooms there will be

First target found in a new location - pterostylis grandiflora. English name matches the look - cobra greenhood

Two in frame shows the leaves up the spike. One of the few orchids that has leaves up the spike

The hooded look

The bush was busy with bird song and movement. This little fairy wren stood still long enough for a photo

Light was a bit low for mosquito orchid photos - deleted a lot including all that had pollinators - acianthus fornicatus

Many more greenhood rosettes in a few new spots - guessing nodding greenhoods

Did find a budding helmet orchid - probably corybas fimbriatus

Tidy cluster of greenhoods

The least worst shot of acianthus fornicatus with pollinators

Flower spike forming on this greenhood - first for the walk

Interesting fungal form on this mushroom - how demeaning to have fungus on a mushroom

Walked the north sand track a bit - budding helmet orchid here. National Parks have cleared a lot of the lantana - orchids beginning to show on the track edges

Silver top mushroom

A bit of sunshine showing to the west. Maybe I could have gone on the bike

Colony of blunt greenhoods is going well - hardly any flowers last season - a few weeks yet to flowering time

Hazy day on the beach - not windy but a lot of spray off the waves

Normally the headlands to the south and north are clear - not today

One blunt greenhood budding - pterostylis curta

Take note of the sign. No dogs allowed. It is a National Park after all.

Guess this owner cannot read the notices. They did bring bags for the dog shit - was not the only one

Another fungal attacked mushroom

New leaf forming on this greenhood in a known spot

Bud forming on this one

Gearing up for a good season - the rain the last few days will help

Tiny leaves for a big flower

Next new spot for pterostylis grandiflora

Top down view. Have walked this track every year for four years and only ever seen this orchid in one spot - 3 new spots added today

Mini mushroom in orange

Scrunchy form in red

Walked a side track hoping to find painted fingers orchid and to check on a known greenhood colony. Lots of plants doing well
The rain started just as I started the drive home. Taking the car saved me 30 minutes riding in the rain. And there was a new season orchid.
Had friends coming over for dinner. My wife wanted a duck entree dish. Looked at a lot of recipes - most entailed cooking the duck breasts in the normal way. Sear skin side down to render the fat. Turn over for 2 minutes. Then finish in oven for 10. Did a few different things for the rest - lemon sauce was too strong. Duck fat potatoes were great.

Late night doing investing trades - did all 3 portfolios

Nice pictures, it seems you are a great photographer
Thanks - been taking photos over 50 years. Started in black and white
Beautiful photos that really capture the season! I loved reading your post from May 18th and, of course, seeing your photo gallery. I was also struck by the image of the mushroom growing on top of another mushroom that sounds like something worth seeing. On the other hand, the car was definitely the right choice in that rain, although sometimes I like to walk in the rain, but I can’t take photos, ha ha ha... I enjoyed the outing 😁
